View Full Version : Coping with Mile High

One of the major reasons Denver has such a great home field advantage of course is the altitude.
Anyone who has tried to exercise within 24 hours of landing in the Rockies will know what that means -- you usually have about 70% of your normal endurance, etc.
Wonder if having a Monday Night game will cause Billick and Co to treat this as a Sunday game -- e.g., go to Denver the day they would normally go for Sunday and allow an extra day for acclimatization. Think that would improve our chances of winning significantly.
Question for Aaron this week/

I think we always play the Broncos well, especially in Denver. We would have beaten them in their house last year if Boller had not been so bumbling.
@Denver and at home against Carolina are very winnable games for us. Neither team has been impressive so far. We have a very, very good chance at going into the bye week at 6-0.

There are ways to combat the altitude change so that it doesn't affect you as much, which I'm sure the team knows about. I've been out to CO a couple of time recently and I'm getting ready to move there, and it seems to me that it affects everyone differently.

We bought a piece of property on a mountain about 6 miles south of Breckenridge and our house here in MD is on the market now. Once it's sold, we're off to CO!
And before anyone asks -- NO! I WILL NOT BECOME A DENVER BRONCOS FAN! What do you think the NFL Sunday Ticket is for??

Donks are favored by 4.5. But I see a Ravens win by 10 or more. Good point on the altitude. Even though I am in outstanding shape:rolling:, I could feel the drag on my body as soon as I got off the plane at DIA today. But, in our case: the extra day of acclimation to the altitude will help. We have owned this team. Even the demoralized 6-10 team lost by just 2 points.

Biggest adjustment to the altitude isn't the thin air, it's getting enough of this:
http://images.lowes.com/product/converted/071142/071142004003mi.jpg
You dehydrate much faster when you're 5,000+ feet in the air.
I've lived in Colorado for 10 months and it took me about 6 of those months to adjust to the lack of hydration. I have completely adjusted to the air and I don't get that heavy beating in my chest walking uphill in the mountains.
By the way, I'm not sure there is any way to adjust to the altitude within a week.

I will be in attendance at the game, I fly to the beautiful Rockies on Saturday...Because of the altitude I won't be able to engage in my trademark pre-game ritual, however...
I will consume large quantities of Rocky Mountain-brewed adult beverages though...

I think Aaron mentioned in the chat two weeks ago that the team would fly out there Sunday i.e. there would be no change in plans just because of the altitude. I'll ask him in tomorrow's chat at 9PM.

Sykesvilleravenfan ain't no brother, thankfully.
Dammit Sykesville, you've just got me a taste for your pre-game shots and now you're off to Colorado? Looks like me and Kevin will have to make all the trips to the Hilti Lot we can before you high tail it cross-country!
Somebody needs to take up duties to create the "Evil Party Ball II". Of course, these is the other aspect of SRF that is much harder to duplicate.

SRF,
I'd also like to welcome you to the Colorado Raven Faithful! Get ready to be disgusted by everything Orange and Blue, and if you've got any lingering anti-John Elway sentiment, you'll have to deal with that too, since his mug is on everything out here (at least when you come down to Denver).
Rav52, it will be great to see you again next Monday.

Fade is right on about the water. You can drink as much as you can and it never seems like you can get enough. Especially if you drink something with a bit more of a kick. You can get a bad case of cottonmouth there
And the altitude isn't so much of an issue with elite athletes as it is wth you and me. The more you expose yourself to it, the less of an issue it is.
I'll be in Denver on Monday as well. I still can't forget last year when Boller fumbled the ball without being touched. The guy behind me couldn't control his laughter, and said "No, seriously, is this your team's best quarterback?".
It'll be nice to see everyone's favorite Marine!

Thanks RockyMRaven - I'm looking forward to getting out there. Our builder is in the Colorado Springs area.
FellsPointRaven - you and WxKevin should come over and see us EVERY game! The Evil Party Ball is always there (however it's not always full!).
Gerg - I will be leaving the Evil Party Ball here for the tailgating crew we will be leaving behind so that they can continue the tradition. I think they are buying the RV from me as well, so that will still be on the same lot every year.
DenverJohn - I have been out to Breckenridge a few times and amazingly there didn't seem to be many Broncos fans there. I met fans from New York, Tennessee, Miami and New England though (no Steeler fans yet either - woo hoo!). No matter what, I will be wearing my purple very proudly! And yes, I do still harbor bad feelings when it comes to that horse-faced jackass Elway and I always will. I don't plan to make many trips to Denver - except to board a plane to come back to Balitmore for about 4 games each year.
I take you all of jobs lined up out there.
Where did you purchase the Evil Party Ball™? I would like to get one.

The EPB was purchased on EBay a few year back. A friend of mine has since bought one, though. I'll find out where she bought hers and let you know.
We don't have jobs lined up yet, however once our house is sold, we can pay off the loan on the lot, build our house, have no mortgage and some $$ in the bank, so we'll find jobs once we get there.

Rav- I'll be flying to Denver Saturday as well. I think it's United, round 3pm. Get to Denver bout 7pm.
I am pumped up about this. I wasn't planning on any regular season road trips this year because I believe I'll be spending chunks of money to see the ravens in the Super Bowl (Again!!).
Dad (Lives in Golden)called me up Friday and said he's got 4-50Yd line tickets, lower deck, 27 rows from the field(27?24? cant remember exactly).
Only bummer is that I doubt he'll want to get there 5 hours before the game to tailgate!!!

Only Monday Night Football I'll be watching all year (9am lecture on Tuesdays) and I'm so looking forward to it gonna be a fantastic atmosphere and both teams are gonna be really really really up for this one, our D vs Plummer is a key matchup I really really like in this one. When composed Plummer has become a much better QB, but pressure him and he's the same old Jake.
