Justin Bannan has been one of the players whose playing time increased with Pryce’s injury. He was on the field for 23 snaps Sunday (21 non-penalty). Here’s how I saw those plays:
Q1 5:55 1/10 Cle 22
Lined up as LDE. The Ravens rushed 4/2 with Gregg and Johnson dropping to cover. Although he was blocked effectively by RG McKinney (68), he got decent push and created space for Scott to come on a delayed blitz. Scott’s rush was a moment late however, as Anderson delivered the 78-yard strike to Edwards who had beaten McAlister.
Q1 1:43 1/10 Cle 36
RDE. Blocked effectively by Steinbach as Lewis ran over right guard for a 5-yard gain.
Q1 1:10 2/5 Cle 41
RDE. Cribbs lined up in the shotgun and Thomas pulled left. Bannan came through the unoccupied spot and was blocked by TE. The play was not well disguised however, and the Ravens converged to the ball holding Cribbs to a 2-yard gain. According to the NFL Gamebook, Mike Flynn was credited with the tackle.
Q2 12:38 1/10 Cle 29
RDE. Bannan was stood up by Thomas, then pancaked by (uggh!) Winslow of all people. The run came directly over Bannan’s spot, but the Ravens converged well, stopping Lewis for a 2-yard gain.
Q2 10:09 1/10 Bal 24
LDT. Doubled by RG and RT, but Bannan minimized the gap by holding his ground. Lewis ran middle for a 2 yard gain.
Q2 9:32 2/8 Bal 22
RDT. 4/0 pass rush. Steinbach handled him initially as the Browns kept 7 back to block 4. Fraley (C, 66) then came to help, chipping Bannan further around the pocket. Anderson was unable to find a receiver and had to dump incomplete to Vickers who released after about 5 seconds.
Q2 9:10 1/10 Bal 31
RDT. 1st step was good, but Steinbach recovered and blocked him effectively. Lewis ran middle for 4 yards.
Q2 8:33 2/6 Bal 27
LDT. Blocked initially by RT (77), then RG as Lewis ran over RG. Ngata and Suggs held Lewis to a 2-yard gain.
Q2 7:39 1/10 Bal 20
RDE. Blocked effectively by Steinbach as the Ravens rushed 5/0. Bannan got no real push, and Scott again came on a blitz that was too late getting to the QB. Anderson threw incomplete to Vickers. The play was nullified when the Browns were called for an illegal formation.
Q2 7:35 1/15 Bal 25
RDE. Crushed on the play by Steinbach and Thomas as Lewis ran wide to the left. Scott strung the play out and held Lewis to a gain of 1.
Q2 5:29 1/1 Bal 1
RDT. Explosive first step plugged the Thomas/Steinbach (LG/LT) hole. Lewis ran right and was stood up for no gain. This is the first of several plays where Bannan looked terrific in goal line defense.
Q2 4:57 2/1 Bal 1
RDT. In these goal line sets with 6 DL’s, I’m calling the 4 inside guys all DT’s. Bannan again submarined effectively, helping to create the pile. Lewis jumped over, extending the ball for the disputed TD.
Q3 5:50 1/2 Bal 2
RDT. Again in on goal line defense, Bannan stuffed the LG/LT hole and appeared to be held on the play. Lewis ran over right guard and was stopped for no gain.
Q3 5:09 2/2 Bal 2
RDT. Bannan jumped offside, but the referee mistakenly flagged Gregg. Anderson’s pass was incomplete to Winslow in the corner of the end zone.
Q3 5:04 2/1 Bal 1
RDT. Bannan got fantastic penetration, cutting through the C/LG hole with a great first step. He was the first to touch Lewis, back at the 4. Suggs then slowed him some more and wrapped up at the 3. One of Bannan’s 2 great plays for the day.
Q3 0:04 1/10 Cle 40
RDE. Blocked effectively by Thomas and the TE. Jamal ran over LG for 8 yards.
Q4 15:00 2/2 Cle 48
LDT. Penetrated immediately past the pulling Fraley to drag Lewis down for a 3-yard loss.
Q4 7:07 1/10 Cle 34
RDE. 4/0 Rush. Thomas then Fraley blocked him effectively as Anderson hit Winslow for an 11-yard gain at the sideline.
Q4 6:32 1/10 Cle 45
RDE. Blocked by Thomas as Lewis ran right for 3 yards.
Q4 5:48 2/7 Cle 48
LDE. The Ravens rushed 4/2 with Johnson and Suggs dropping to zone. Bannan came untouched on what appears to be a missed assignment by the RT. Lewis, however delivered a spectacular upending block to flatten Bannan. The pass went incomplete to the right, intended for Vickers.
Q4 2:38 1/10 Cle 44
LDE. Blocked effectively by RT/RG. Lewis ran right but was taken down by Ray for just a 1-yard gain with the Ravens completely focused on the run at this stage.
Q4 2:00 2/9 Cle 45
RDE. Thomas whiffed on his block, but the TE blocked Bannan towards center. Lewis was stopped by Gregg for a 2-yard gain.
Q4 1:18 3/7 Cle 47
RDE. Bannan lined up offsides, but there was no flag. He was blocked effectively by Thomas. Lewis was again stopped for a gain of just 1
Summary Notes:
• Bannan was very effective in goal line situations. He showed a good 1st step, controlling his gap each time. I look at the YPC stats with a jaundiced eye for those who played in the goal line situations. Why? I don’t know what the average YPC is from the opponent 1 yard line, but I know it’s less than 1 yard. By comparison, at the 50 yard line, I’d guess the average YPC is close to the average for any LoS. Does anyone know of a study on this? It sounds like something Football Outsiders might do and I’d like to include an adjustment for position on the field. Anyway, back to Bannan...despite the fact that he had 4 goal line snaps to pad his stats, he played very well on those
• For the game, the Ravens allowed just 29 yards on 17 rushes (1.7 YPC) with Bannan in. Without him they rushed 11 times for 71 yards (6.5 YPC) excluding the 2 kneels. He made only 1 tackle personally, but he had a legitimately fine game against the run.
• On the Browns 4 passing plays, however, they piled up 89 yards (22.3 YPP), including the bomb to Edwards. Was that play his fault? No, but it’s symptomatic of the problem. The Ravens have just 1 sack in 85 pass plays since the beginning of 2006 with him in. He also detracts from pass rush versatility, since he can’t effectively drop to zone coverage. He’s just a guy who typically requires a single lineman to pass block.
• I’m not sure how to interpret the fact that Edwards did not play on any of the last 3 series. I’d like to believe Bannan has taken the job, but something tells me Ryan did it solely because he’s the more effective run stopper.
