When the other teams offense start 4 drives across the 50, 2 in field goal range, because of turnovers the offense gave up, it's kind of hard to do your job on defense.

Just wondering if you noticed a couple things:

- Both our starting corners were out
- The Ravens D really stepped up the QB pressure to compensate for the lack of cover talent
- The Ravens stuck with mostly man coverage because they had to keep the pressure up
- This may have worked on a longer field (more opps to produce sacks) but on a short field (created by offensive turnovers) it's a recipe for disaster.

Ray and the D did their job by shutting down the run.
The Ravens D did about as expected considering the injuries to the corners.
The O lost the game with the turnovers.

I agree with your assessment, and I would think everyone on the team knows this as well, I just wish Ray wouldn't say it to the media. It makes him sound as if he's throwing the offense under the bus. It's not about what the offense or defense did or didn't do; you win and lose as a team.

Reed said the same thing about the turnovers and how we can't have them.

You see players say that after every loss on almost any team.

"You just can't turn the ball over like that and expect to win".

Ray may have opened his mouth and said some stuff that he maybe shouldn't have (i.e. after the Buffalo game) but what he said on Monday was fine IMO.

I think Ray's comments after this game were blown a bit out of proportion -- because of his comments after the Bills game, I think the press will now scrutinize everything he says after a loss and run with it.

He wasn't exactly dropping any bombshells by saying you can't turn the ball over that many times. Everyone on the team, offense, defense or special teams, would no doubt agree.

I didn't hear the comments but if they are as advertised, PP nailed it 100%.

Acceptable:
"You can't turn the ball over like that and expect to win."

Unacceptable:
"Steve must have been drinking or something. I swear, I drink sometimes, and I have to be WASTED before I'm that sloppy."

For instance. :)

Now Now Steve couldn't have been drinking, cuz we all know he drives while he drinks, and our drives didn't get anywhere.

Why does Ray not get the Jonny u treatment around here?

I understand the frustration with Billick, but Ray does his thing with every ounce of effort and all out sincerity, even if delusional and partisan, and not P.C. or what ever. The ting is though, he is our guy and I don't like how quick the fans and local media are to turn on him when he says something they don't like or think fits the appropriate team message to project for the Ravens?
Circle the wagons purple people!

Ray is not a politician, he is not a coach, he is not a preacher, he is not holding a press conference. The microphones are in his face, he has to respond to the pointed questions. You rip him no matter what he says because they lost. whatever.

The Steelers started their 5 touchdown "drives" at:

The Ravens' 20
The Ravens' 33
The Ravens' 34
The 50 yard line, and
The Ravens' 44

It's true they could have held them to mostly field goals, but being on the road in the torrential downpour without both corners makes it a bit tougher.

The part of Ray's rant that I am most interested in was what he said about practice. The comments about turnovers doesn't bother me a bit. He was trying to stay positive and not call out the offense. Hence "come see me at my house" and "I play defense, I'm not getting dragged into that again".

He talked about "how you practice is how youre gonna play". I wish someone could elaborate on this. The media has seemingly ignored those comments. I would love to know if McNair is laying it on the ground in practice and if the rest of the team was expecting this kind of performance.

This is the first time I heard that Ray had said that, and I find it really interesting. As I mentioned in another thread, I was surprised at how noodle-armed McNair looked in this game because I had read an article (by Aaron, I think) that included quotes from guys like Mark Clayton who claimed that McNair was throwing the ball in practice last week with some real zip, so it seemed as if the time off must have helped him out. But in the actual game, he could not throw the ball with any zip at all.

I don't know if it was wishful thinking, positive reinforcement, or some whacky conspiracy to say the right things to the press, but something doesn't add up.

Seriously? The front 7 for the most part played well, especially if you rate them against the CBs, STs and the Offense. Yes they did miss a couple of sacks but overall they were the only part of the team that played well enough to win. Look at Willie Parker's rush numbers if you need evidence of how they played.

The defense, even the overmatched corners, all played their asses off, I thought.

Many practices are closed to the press. I am curious to hear how these quotes will play out, as they undoubtedly will.

The D did the best they could minus 2 of the most critical parts.

now that we have seen what the corners look like when CMac and rolle are out i would rather have both of them then there backups playing anytime.

That must have just been fonder fed to the press. There is no way McNair could have been throwing the ball with zip during practice, then like a wet noodle during unless he threw his arm out in practice or the first play of the game.

Yeah, I did have a very bad feeling once I heard Rolle and CMac were out. The Wife(tm) looked at me during the game and said "No way a knee and mystery illness is that bad. Shoot up the knee and do whatever you need to to Rolle and get them out there"
Then she proceeded to swear like a drunken sailor...
