Casey Willet was on NST on my ride home and stated that it is confirmed that Rolle will not play Sunday.
I've heard through the grapevine that he probably won't play again this season.

I'm thinking this could be the end of his career. Whatever illness this is, it can't be good.

Well that was the biggest rumour at the time it first hit, so it wouldn't be a great surprise.

At this point, it's hard to not consider that possibility. The cloak of silence regarding whatever is wrong makes it impossible to really know, but you have to consider it, at a minimum.
Tirico, on MNF, mentioned in an oddly casual way that Rolle had a problem with his spleen, but they never brought it up again as far as I know, and I haven't heard anyone confirm that this is true.

I would think that whatever the illness is that it must have some kind of social stigma attached to it or they would talk about it. Not sure why they would go to such great lengths to keep it quiet if ti was a spleen problem.
Hopefully he can retire from football and have a good life thereafter.

Rolle's injury is NOT spleen-related and it doesn't have any social stigma attached to it. I'm certainly not going to be the one in town to "go public" with the illness, but I know what his condition is and I can assure you it's a medical condition that no athlete would be able to overcome without the proper medication. And even then, as has been the case with Rolle, finding the right medication and being able to play high-level sports under that medication are two different issues. The "silence" issue has more to do with the HIPAA act than anything else. The Ravens are bound to follow it via the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement. Google it if you like and you'll learn more about it. The team is merely following the agreement and Rolle's decision to not discuss his condition is merely part of the agreement as well. But I can assure you (and I know where you all are going with it) his condition has no "social stigma" attached to it.

I understand HIPAA as I have to follow those regulations in my work. Thanks for that amount of clarification as it is certainly Rolle's personal right to privacy. I think many people including myself are more worried that the guy has some kind of terminal illness and we just want to know that he will be ok. As far as "knowing where I am going with it" you could be wrong there. By social stigma, I was thinking more along the lines of Bipolar Disorder as that can have "flare ups" and medicating it can be quite a challenge and it seems consistant with his ups and downs.

I don't doubt you at all, and I'm not asking what the specific issue is, since it's really none of our business, but isn't it somewhat irresponsible of ESPN to report something about a player's condition that is apparently not true? Even if they actually believed it was spleen-related, why should they mention it on MNF when the team has not talked about it at all? ESPN's MNF is a joke.

Looks like the play of Rolle is finished for the year. It very well be the end of his career also anyway I hope he gets well. I don't think we ever saw the real Rolle.

I really hope Rolle is going to be okay, for his life, not necessarily football. I was living in Nashville when Rolle and McNair were in their prime, since that was always the local game on and my friends were Titans fans I always watched. Rolle used to be an amazing corner back then, and always seemed like a really good guy.
I wish him the best, and respect his privacy.

I am by far no expert on Sickle Cell but my ex and my youngest son both have a rare form of it called beta thalassemia sickle cell. And there is NO cure at all for Sickle cell. But if he honestly has sickle cell I am not sure how he made it this far through college and nfl football. Extreme sports and running actually causes attacks of sickle cell, which are extremely painful and can last for weeks at a time. Lack of oxogen is already a huge issue with SC so running 100 yds would only make it 100% worse. Most people with SC need many blood transfusions and are required to keep oxogen within a reasonable distant to make sure that they can get right on it when they have an attack.
So as far as me agreeing he has SC is kinda far off because most with SC are diagnosised @ birth and know they are limited to phycial sports such as football. But there are times where is goes un-diagnosised for years.
I hope for his sake he gets healthy and is able to live a normal life with his family!

The first thing I said out loud to myself in the car when I heard this news (yes I talk to myself) was that he is done with his career.
I know people have been critical of him but he has actually been a better CB than some of those people think. He is/was a better than average CB here who at the height of his career was a Pro Bowler.
Not making light of Rolle's injury but CMac's injury sounds pretty bad as well. The Rolle situation may be the only thing that gets/keeps him on the field the rest of the year. Without CMac and Rolle, this is going to be even a longer year.

Sickle Cell?
You're born with that, you don't develop it, it's a genetic disorder that you have from birth. As a high level athlete he'd have encountered problems with it long before his 10th NFL season.
There have been some absolutely barmy suggestions as to what his illness might be, the MRSA one for example was quite amusing unless MRSA is different state side to what it is in the UK, which I'm almost certain it isn't.
I know the not knowing fuels this speculation, but really, sometimes you've just gotta accept it and stop trying to guess wildly on absolutely no basis as to what the illness might be. There are a multitude of illnesses and diseases which have symptoms such as lethargy and those we have been told about Rolle, are we gonna start going through those in alphabetical order?

I'll trust the opinion of friends who are doctors and training to be doctors and know about such conditions over the wild guess of a sports fan on whether this sounds like Sickle Cell trait or not (btw the ME who investigated Devaughn Darling's death said sickle cell trait MAY have been linked to his death, nothing has been proven on that front). It'd be extremely rare for someone with sickle cell trait to be facing his first complications at the age of 31, particularly as a sportsman competing at any extremely high level and intensity for over a decade.
Sports fan playing doctor = always a bad idea.

Good god.
Just stop with the guessing.
None have you have a clue as to what he has.
Just hope what he does have won't affect his life in a big way after his playing days are over.
Sheesh.

Yes master....sooooo......sorry!!!!!
Whatever.
The guy has a serious medical condition and some people think they have a clue as to what it is. I got news for you. You don't.
Stop trying to speculate. It's annoying and quite frankly it's uncalled for.

The Ravens need to IR him if this is a condition that cannot be controlled and is life threatening.

For semantics sake, he'd go on the non-football related injuries list (or whatever it's called) would he not?

GKB, our threads are usually a lot better than this one, which went to hell in a hurry. But please drop in every once in a while.
BTW, I heard a brief Fox Sports radio report today that said Rolle was out for the year. I wouldn't be surprised, but I don't think it's official -- has anyone else heard that?

That's what DF has been speculating on the air. I don't doubt it. If there were any db's on the practice squad (think there aren't, correct if wrong please) we might have seen him IR'ed.
Hell with all our injuries I wonder if we even *have* a practice squad anymore.

People have been critcal of C-mac as well over the years.
Some people don't realize how good they have it until you get a display like we had against Pittsburgh.
I don't care how good of a DB you are, if you don't have QB pressure from your front seven, you're going to get burned.
You're going to get burned from time to time regardless if you're a DB.
The nature and the rules of the game almost dictate the disadvantage they are at now.
The good ones like Rolle and C-mac limit how much it happens.
If the rest of their teammates are doing what they're supposed to be doing, and being in position where they're supposed to be, the amount of times they are burnt is dropped even more.
Watching Derrick Martin look back over his shoulder with his arms stretched out waiting for a ball to come down that was already in Nate Washingtons arms on the ground for a TD should show those critics all they need to see.

So true.
I remember when people were sayin to let Cmac go and sign Gary Baxter long term.
Monday night was proof positive how good we've had it at CB over the years.

Great point.
My friend and I were discussing this last night and he said the same thing. He is a Steelers fan and was making the comment he never really heard anything about our secondary -- which he saw as a function of just how good our healthy secondary is!

In Today's NFL, even great cornerbacks get beat for long TD's. The greatest of the great, minimize the occurrences, and do what CMAC does, and takes the player down before the ball gets there, when it's obvious he's about to catch it and take off. It's the nature of the game at this point. As bad as our secondary has been to our eyes, there have been 22 worse to the eyes of those that follow them weekly. If you watch a single team over and over again, you will see it's secondary constantly get torched.
