In his weekly session with the media, defensive coordinator Rex Ryan talked about how the defense has to take a share of the blame for Monday night’s 38-7 loss at Pittsburgh. The Ravens tied a team record by giving up five touchdown passes.

Before a question was asked, Ryan gave this opening statement:

“On defense, we got to hold up our end of the bargain. No matter if it’s long field, short field or whatever, we can’t give up scores. We got to play a lot better. I was proud of the way that we finished that game. There is plenty of fight in this group. That’s encouraging.

“That’s what this team is all about. That’s why I think as we move forward into the second half of the season, you’re going to see how the closeness of this football team affects the win-loss total. We expect to make a great run at it, and we’re that kind of team to get it done.”

I would take this as Rex preaching the company line.
Exactly what is he supposed to say?

I'd imagine deep inside he knows this offense sucks beyond all belief and hasn't even come close to holding up its end of the bargain (in 9 freakin' years!!), but he can't come out and say it.

Rex has been chirpin quite a bit lately IMO.

And not in a good way.

I think there's some truth to this. Yes the defence was put in a short field five times and yes the defence was undermanned, but the defence didn't make a stop, we only forced one field goal from them. That's not what he expects from this unit.

Exactly. Yes, they were put in a bad position multiple times, but it's not like the Steelers were starting those drives at the Ravens one yard line. They could have stopped them once or twice in the first half but didn't. Short field or not, giving up five TDs in one half is not good.

I don't see anything wrong with what he said.

That's exactly what he is supposed to say. He can't come out and say that "We can't stop the opposing team every time when they start on their side of the field because of our inept offense."

The run defense against Pitt was excellent. They were getting pressure on Cheeseburger, maybe not as much as they should, but they had problems bring him down. The secondary sucked donkey balls.

Rex SHOULD take some blame.

He should have implemented a different strategy.

The "Let's blitz then blitz and see what happens" strategy can ONLY work if your cornerbacks are playing well.

Ryan knew going into this game 2 backup corners
(Not 1 but 2) would be starting .

To Ryan's credit the Defense TOTALLY shutdown the Squeelers in the 2nd half.

Whatever secondary scheme they used in the second half should have been installed after the first TD.

Billick isn't the only coach on this team with an ego.

I disagree

I think the Steelers decided to shut it down more so then our defense.

The game was already well in hand and Rothlisberger had already been dinged up.

With the way our secondary was playing out there, I think the Steelers could have really run the score up if they wanted to.

My post about Ryan talking wasn't directed towards the comments on this thread.

It's about what he's been saying this year in general.

I hear you -- I think a lot of the team has been talking too much this season. These radio appearances in particular have gotten out of hand. There's just too much of it.

Exactly.

Listening to him Monday mornings on NST is what Im talkin about.

I love confidence etc.....

But at some point it's better to just give a generic answer and move on instead of making dumb comments.
