Per Aaron Wilson.

OWINGS MILLS -- Baltimore Ravens running back Jamal Lewis has been shut down for the remainder of the preseason in order to recuperate from a nagging hip injury.

Instead of practicing and playing in games, the former NFL Offensive Player of the Year will spend his time rehabbing an injury that forced him on the physically unable to perform list at the start of training camp.
Lewis, who strained his left hip flexor running sprints in late July, played in the first two preseason games and rushed for a combined 61 yards on 15 carries.

However, the former Pro Bowl runner continued to complain about recurring soreness in his hip and quadriceps. Now, he'll be sidelined until the practice week heading into the Ravens' Sept. 10 season opener at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The whole story should appear on PF24x7 soon.

Oh wow. Thank goodness for Musa Smith, Mike Anderson, and even P.J. Daniels who after loking at the game, again, today ran very well. I hope this problem isn't serious. Considering that he has had this discomfort, he has run very well. Imagine what Jamal will do once his hip is fine.

Does anyone else think this is to get a better look at Musa as well?

This means more snaps with the first team for Musa.

If Musa continues to amaze this preseason and Jamal's hip is still iffy, could Musa be the starter? Or do you guys think that MA would be the default back?

Very interesting times indeed.

Could Jamal go on PUP or even the IR? This will be interesting two weeks ahead.

Yeah, let's trade Musa or MA....

Wait, this is why we didn'tm you never know. He was lookign good so far, so hopefeully this is extremely precautionary, and not a sign we wasted $6m dollars($2.7 agaisnt the cap).

MA is prob. cheering. It will be great to see what Musa can do. I like what I've seen from Jamal, he is hitting the hole without dancing!

What do you think of this? If Musa turns out to be the real thing and has a stellar season, could we trade Jamal, get a starter out of it and keep Anderson?

I hope Jamal is OK! He had 61 yards, on 15 carries? Double that to his desired 30 carries a game, and we have the Jamal of old.
As for Musa, it will be interesting to see if he can repeat his success against a starting defense. I still want to see if MA can hold onto the 2nd string RB position. Not that he's lost it yet, but if he keeps it up, he will. Just my 2 cents :)

I am not too concerned about Jamal missing the rest of the preseason. Hell Tomlinson hasn't been playing all preseason, if I am not mistaken.

I doubt this has anything to do with wanting to see Musa Smith play more. The RAVENS already know what Musa Smith can do. That's why they drafted him in the 3rd round three years ago.

I don't remember the exact numbet nut someone mentioned on TV that LT has had under a "dozen or so" total preseason carries in his CAREER.

Furthermore Jamal already proved healthier then last year and thus further preseason carries cold only do harm.

Despite how well Musa has played, I'd like to see the Ravens really give Mike Anderson a lot of work as the feature back. I'm confident the guy is a solid running back despite all of his experience coming in Denver's infamous chop blocking one cut system. He just needs the live reps to adjust to our system. Musa already knows our system and I'd hate to see him get over worked and end up injured again.

Yeah, it was something like that they mentioned last night during the preseason game. I would much rather see Jamal sit out the rest of the preseason games and rehab the hip and being ready for the Tampa Bay game.

Oh, no....could he be getting older or what? These nagging injuries are starting to show all the time. I know he's like only 30, but is it an old 30? As far as Musa is concerned...I agree with the earlier post, let's see what he can do against a first string D:hammer:

Are you referring to Jamal being 30? If so, Jamal Lewis turns 27 on the 29th of this month. He's got a couple years before he hits 30.

My mistake. I forgot he came out early in 2000.:grbac:

Even so, at 27 a big physical back is approaching the point where his numbers start to decline.

ecept this one has missed considerable time with injuries so he is sitll relatively fresh

Hopefully this is more of a precautionary type sidelining rather then one of an injury that nobody wants to fully disclose yet.
Seems to me we do that pretty well from time to time.
We're gonna find out in a few weeks that's for sure.

In the mean time, I think this should be the Mike Anderson/PJ Daniels show.

I think we have a pretty good idea what Musa Smith can do, and would just assume keep that under wraps as well!!

Perfect opportunity to really give Anderson and Daniels some substantial playing time to see what they both have.
Particurally Daniels since he's the rookie that has no NFL history.

I find it hard to believe we're going to carry that many running backs (and the 4 in discussion aren't even all of them IIRC), in which case somebody has to go.

Did you know that the 36 yard screen pass Musa ran was against the first string defense of the Eagles? Musa is performing well against 1st and 2nd team defenses. He is for real.

Your name change has done such wonders PR. I find myself on your side of things now almost all the time. Hehehehehe

Seriously, watch the Musa video. He's doing it against the 1st team, and that was McNair that threw the ball to him.

The thing I think no one was expecting, and I include myself in that group, is that Musa has some JETS in him too. We think of him as the same type of pounding back that Jamal is, but I don't think Jamal in the open space is as fast as Musa is. When he got past the first level of defenders on his touchdown run, he shifted into a whole other gear that I didn't know he had.

If anything, I think it's time to take him off special teams where he has more of a chance to really get hurt. Let him get snaps during the season. And if this keeps up, Ozzie really has an interesting offseason decision to make.

Yea, we will.

Put me in the skeptical crowd on this one.

Sure it will nice to see both Anderson and Musa get some extra carries in the preseason but Im very leery about what's going on with Jamal.

This organization has bullshitted about injuries for years now and I don't think they've changed their ways. The report said "at least 2 weeks". That is a red flag for me. Im no chicken little and Im not panicking but this news isn't good at all.

My problem is that I think they should've rested Jamal more before playing him in the first 2 preseason games. If he's been complaining of pain in the area of the injury, then sit his ass until he's pain free.

I'd sure as hell be more comfortable with him coming back now after an extra 2 weeks of rest and rehab than wondering if he injured the hip more while playing in some BS preseason games.

I don't mind shutting Jamal down, let him get healthy. He is back to his old running style, which is nice. If he can't go week 1 we still have Muuuuusa and MA. And bottom line that is still better than a lot of teams.

It seems to me that even if Jamal is out, MA will still be relegated to a 3rd down role. I am not ocnvinced from his history that MA is capable of taking 25-30 snaps a game.

Assuming Jamal is out for a regular season game, I see the chart looking like this:

RB - M. Smith, M. Anderson, PJ Daniels

As for who gets the carries for the rest of pre-season. Give them to MA next week, but I want to see Musa put a hurting on the Deadskin first team D.

You can never have enough quality depth at running back. The Ravens are very fortunate to be in the situation that they find themselves.

Where did the "at least 2 weeks" come from. All I have read is that they are shutting him down for the rest of the preseason and he will start practice again before the Tampa game. I am sure he was fine heading into the preseason, and it flared up again, he could play through it, but its just precautionary. No need to keep playing him in meaningless games if his hip is sore, let him rest until we really need him.

The first report on ESPN said "at least 2 weeks" so that is what I was going on.

And he was not fine heading into the preseason. That's the whole point IMO.

He said the injury hasn't gone away so why was he playing in the 1st place? Like I said, I would've rather had him sit out the past 2 games, recover fully, and then play the next 2 preseason games.

Now we'll have to wait and see if the next 2 weeks are enough for him to get back to 100% and play vs TB in week 1.

A few freinds and I saw Jamal last night, One asked
"So I hear you're hurt now, you look fine"

His Response was something to the effect of;

"I'mfine, my leg got tweaked again a little, and it's PRESEASON and I'm a vet, so I get a couple weeks off"

It was obvious that he was reveling in the fact that he gets a couple weeks off of practice. He assured us 100% by Tampa, if not WEEKS before. My estimation is thatheis probably 80-90% now.

Now everyone involved was drunk, But it seemed like if they had a regular season game TODAY that he would be playing with little lingering effect.

It's preseason, they are shuttign him down. No Biggie.

His injury worries me a little. After the end of the pre season hope Jamal comes back strong. If he doesn't then how long do we go with him ?

GO RAVENS
