Here we go again, for the second year, time to mock the mocks, time to see how crazy all those predictors happen to be!
What's going on?
I've compiled a list of 50+ mock drafts freely available on the internet. I am going to track them week to week from now (immediately after the superbowl) all the way until the night before the draft.
Why?
Sometimes people are so horribly wrong it's funny
Last year, Ben Grubbs was the consensus #1 pick the night before draft day!
Because I can
What will you been seeing week to week?
After this first week, you're going to see week to week variations of the top 5-6 candidates from the first and second round. Some names will appear, some will drop off the charts. We can talk about how everyone is stupid. I love it.
Week 1 results
Round 1
Brian Brohm: 23
Matt Ryan: 10
Mike Jenkins: 7
Vernon Gholston: 5
Ryan Clady: 3
Leodis McKelvin: 3
Andre Woodson: 3
Sedrick Ellis: 1
Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie: 1
Round 2
Quentin Groves: 1
Tracy Porter: 1
Ali Highsmith: 1
James Hardy: 1
Terrell Thomas: 1
Reggie Smith: 1
Joe Flacco: 1
Lawrence Jackson: 1
Castille Simeon: 1
Thoughts:
What a shocker, QBs dominating the board. Shortly followed by the best DE or CB that is available at #8 according to that mocker's amateur opinion. Not much else to say.
Time for you to sound off
EDIT: if you'd like to see the data set (ie, excel 2007 spreadsheet) please PM me and I'd be more than happy to talk about inclusion of additional mocks or exclusion of mocks that are consistently bad. Also, if you'd like to do a 2 round mock and include it in the data set, then PM me that as well!! I update Monday afternoons every week with the exception of "night before draft day"
Thanks!
Matt

Trade down...I am not a pro scout, but from reading write-ups of players, there does not appear to be a huge talent drop off from 8 to around 20 or so.

I'm starting to like Joe Flacco in the 2nd round...that would leave us free to draft a bigger impact player at CB/DE/WR/OL in Round 1.

How no one has us taking Talib is beyond me. If we draft Brohm at #8 I might kill myself.

Because his skill set isn't good enough for a top ten, he's not big enough, doesn't play strong enough and can't tackle worth a damn.
If we were to go CB then QB I'd want it be Leodis McKelvin and Chad Henne.

I want no part of Gholston. DRC has been shooting up the board and could be a nice pick.
If Matt Ryan is on the board, it makes for a very tough call, but if not, I'd love a top 2 of Mike Jenkins or Rodgers-Cromartie and Flacco.

I've found myself agreeing with you a lot lately. I'm with you again here.

Like Deion Sanders? How 'bout Duane Starks? He was pretty good in Baltimore. There are a lot of CBs that fit that description that turned out to be pretty good. This guy's a ball hawk and a playmaker, and we need that at the position. He's on boards as high as #6...taking him top ten might be a small reach. But there's virtually no difference between the #6 prospect and the #20 prospect right now, so in-so-far as it's a reach to take Talib at #8 it's pretty much a reach to take anybody at #8.

What's wrong with Gholston?
And why do you like guys that shoot up the board after the season is over? Look back over past drafts at guys that blew up the draft board after the season ended and how successful they've been. Kyle Boller, anyone? Measuring these guys based on how well they do in workouts and the Sr Bowl is nuts.
I like McKelvin a lot too. I like trading down the most. Hopefully pick up another 2nd rounder this year and maybe a 1st or another 2nd next year as well.

I don't dispute that Talib could turn into a good corner, I actually think his coverage skills are up there with McKelvin's as the top coverage guys in the draft. But Talib's complete lack of physicality will IMO preclude him from rising anywhere above around the 20's.

Since I saw the Senior Bowl highlights I've been hoping for McKelvin.

Quite possible. I agree completely that I'd rather trade down in the 1st, particularly if we wanted to get Talib. That said, I wouldn't mind our picking him at #8. Dude is a ball hawk in a major way. And he never really had to be all that physical against his opponents. He was a complete shut-down corner. Anyone that threw at him wound up either getting picked or having it knocked away. He's an incredible cover corner.
McKelvin is a great option as well.

That's entirely true but we've always asked our CBs to be strong, physical forces against the run, almost demi linebackers on sweeps and runs outside. If you think of guys like CMac, Baxter, heck even Rolle has been more physical against the run here than he was in Tennessee. Starks provides the exception to every rule and I'm just not sure he'll figure highly with us. I've got no basis for that, just a gut feeling.

He was successful in college, he just didn't play against top competition. And he is an incredible athlete and played excellently among top competition at the Senior Bowl.

what's the beef against Gholston?
When I saw that kid play he was tearing up O-lines like a knife thru butter.

I don't think that's necessarily the case at all. Starks as you mentioned clearly wasn't. Rolle certainly isn't though I agree he's more of a presence against the run with us than Tenn. Baxter got converted to S for a while. Deoin is most certainly not a run stuffer.
If we want a hard hitter, Talib isn't the guy, no doubt. But he might be the best cover corner in the draft.

The beef is that he disappears in some games, but I'm not overly concerned about that. We've had guys that had reps like that come through here and it's never been an issue. Sam Adams, Rob Burnett, and Haloti Ngata are three DLs off the top of my head that had those criticisms about them coming into Balt, and we certainly never heard about that again.
I think Gholston would be a terrific pick for us. We've always had tons of success with tweener type guys. This dude is a beast. If we can get and keep him playing hard every down, he could be an absolute animal on the other side of Suggs.

Of course not, at #8? NO ONE has him falling that low, most drafts he's top 3.

If Chris Long is available at #8, we'd better take him.
I can hope can't I? ;)

No chance. Seriously, none. Latest he goes is #5 to KC.

Don't see the need for KC to take Long going of on a tangent. They've got Jared Allen (at worst they franchise him, no way they let him loose) and Tamba Hali, don't see them plugging Long in at DT so don't see why KC would take him.

Aargh! I always get Chris and Jake confused as to which is the OT...
Chris will go in front of Jake so it won't matter. He might go #1 overall. Miami, StL, and NYJ all have a need for him, and NE won't let him slide since he'll be BPA and they'll be able to plug him in for Seymore soon enough.
