OK, I have seen at least 20 threads wondering why Cody has not got more playing time. Here's a breakdown on how I saw his 14 plays (including 1 accepted penalty) this last Sunday:
The format here is Quarter--Time--Down--Distance:
1.
1 14:13 3/6: In his first NFL play, Lined up as RDE and contained Vick as he rolled left. Did not overcommit and lunge for a sack. Pass went incomplete.
2.
1 7:33 2/9: Lined up as NT and trailed the run right with 3 Ravens ahead of him. Loss of 4 on great containment by Ivy.
3.
1 7:03 3/13: Lined up at LDE, but run went left. Suggs tackled Dunn for another 4-yard loss. Note that by his 3rd NFL play, he's played all of the 3-4 line positions.
4.
2 14:09 2/12: Lined up at NT. Beat his man, but Vick had already rolled left and threw an incomplete pass.
5.
2 6:56 3/11: RDE. Dropped into pass coverage on a zone blitz. Pass was thrown incomlpete.
6.
2 1:40 1/10: NT. Quick out to Jenkins lined up wide right. Cody was not a factor. Play went for 1 yard. This was to be the most successful pass play the Falcons ran with Cody in.
7.
2 1:07 2/9: NT. Cody was really the only man in the middle for the Ravens on the play. He rushed the passer, trying to beat his man to the left, and Vick ran middle for a 7-yard gain. The play was nullified by a holding call on the LG (who tackled Suggs).
8.
3 9:05 2/10: LDE. Play was ran middle for a 1-yard gain. Cody was not a factor.
9.
3 8:24 3/9: NT. Got his hands up and on the center, occupying him briefly as the Ravens brought pressure from the right. After the push he dropped into short middle pass coverage. Samari Rolle registered the sack on Vick for a 7-yard loss.
10.
3 2:05 3/3: NT. Did not rush hard. Looks like he might have been trying to contain a possible Vick scramble with the ball on the 3-yard line. Pass was thrown incomplete on a fade route that probably should have reulted in pick, but forced the Falcons to settle for a field goal to tie the game at 10.
11.
4 15:00 2/20: NT. Pancaked on Dunn's 9-yard run to the right.
12.
4 12:31 2/8: NT. Dunn ran right for a 4-yard gain. Pursuing the play, Cody was in on the tackle.
13.
4 11:53 3/4: LDE. Got pressure from Vick's right as he dropped back. Maitained containment as Pryce grabbed Vick's ankles and Sapp applied the shot to take Vick down for a 17-yard loss that took the Falcons from a short FG attempt to out of FG range.
14.
4 2:55 1/10: NT. Worked to rush to the left, however, as Suggs sacked Vick for a 5-yard loss.
A few observations:
1. He sure is not using the Roderick Green ("there's the QB, go get him") playbook. Cody lined up at 3 different positions and was used in pass coverage twice. I have seen speculation on this board that Cody was not picking up the playbook quickly, but I can see absolutely no indication of that.
2. If I had to use a single word to describe his game, it was "containment". He did not once overcommit to chasing Vick, and provided help on 2 sacks and an incomplete pass.
3. He never played anything but a passing down. He was in twice on 1/10, but both times with little time left in the half.
4. On 8 passing plays with Cody in the game, Vick was 1 of 5 for 1 yard and was sacked 3 times for 29 yards. Net was -28 yards on 8 passing plays.
5. With Cody in, the Falcons ran the ball 5 times for 6 total yards. They were also guilty of a holding penalty.
6. He lined up at all 3 positions in the Ravens 3-4, and contributed something from each. Jarret Johnson has played well for the Ravens in this role, but if Ray returns Sunday, I would like to think the Ravens will find a way to get Cody some snaps.
