First things first...I am still missing a copy of the Cincy game, and would love to have the analysis for my spreadsheet. If you can get me a copy of the Cincy game on DVD, I'll pay $20 for your time and expenses (obviously, I won't pay for the game itself since that would be illegal). If you can get me one in SP mode, I'll pay $40 for the additional disc and time required.

I included the KC game, and season stats mentioned below will all be short the Cincy game.

What a very fun game to watch. The fans were very nice to us in KC. Right up there with Tennessee for classiest in road parks. Not even a hint of verbal abuse.

Observations:

1. Edwards got his first playing time since the Carolina game. He had a tackle and a PD in 10 plays.

2. Stills also was in for 8 snaps (includes 1 accepted penalty), bringing his total to just 30 for the year. However, 3 of the 27 non penalties he has been in for have resulted in turnovers, including a fumble he both forced and recovered vs. Clev. Stills played in 3 pass rush packages with Pryce and Suggs for the first 3 quarters, then the first 5 plays of the final drive.

3. Ngata continues to excell. Despite being in for the 47-yard LJ run, he finished the day with an average of just 3.8 yards per play against (as opposed to 5.1 when Ngata was not in). With him in, the Chiefs passes 9 times for just 24 net yards, and rushed 23 times for 98 yards (4.3). It's continues to not show up in the box scores anywhere (1 tackle), but he is having 1 hell of a year. He was up to 32 plays vs. KC (3 less than Gregg), which is very encouraging. Recognition always trails accomplishment, and he does not have either the productivity or stamina of Kelly Gregg, so he won't go to the Pro Bowl this season, but he has been amazing within the context he has played. Kinda reminds me of John Lowenstein circa 1982. Platoon player with outrageous results.

4. Johnson played well, being in for 2 turnovers on just 25 plays and allowing only 3.6 yards per play. Johnson leads the team in yards per pass play for the season.

5. OK, here's another stat...3rd down conversions are among the most talked about stats for a defense, but I was struck by how many times the Ravens got the Chiefs to 3rd down Sunday. For the day, the Chiefs converted on just 2 of their 23 1st down plays (8.7% for the game. I will program in an accurate season average for next week, but my hand count is 19%). They also converted just 4 of 21 on 2nd down (19%, vs. a hand-count of 28% for the season). The Chiefs converted 0 of 15 on 1st down with Ngata in, and 1 of 13 on 2nd down. LJ's 2nd and 5 rumble separated him from a spotless 0 for 28. I just thought this was kinda interesting. It is obviously just the sort of stat where folks who play on prevent D drives are going to look worse.

6. The Ravens rushed 4 a total of 24 times, including 4 sacks! That matched the Pitt game for getting to the QB with only 4. They rushed 5 men only twice (0 sacks), and 6 another 6 times (1 sack). The Chiefs were 3 of 5 for 52 net yards vs. a 6-man rush. While I thought the Ravens lost the Cincy game in part due to rush timidity, the surface evidence from KC would certainly suggest we were more effective with 7 in coverage.

7. Thomas was dropped into zone coverage 17 times during the game. It's a testament to both the gameplan and his actual pash rushing ability that he has managed 10 sacks this year with so low a percentage of plays chasing the QB. The Ravens used the zone coverage to disguise a blitz just 6 other times in the game (2 each by Stills, Suggs, and Johnson). 3 of the 4 QB sacks with 4 rushing came with a plain vanilla 4 man rush with no one dropping off the line into coverage!

Great work! You give me something to look for in the next game. It's funny that Ngata rarely gets noted in the TV broadcasts for the work he does up front, but they were all over Siragusa who did similar things.

it's obvious that blitzing helps sack totals, but there is such thing as a 'coverage sack'; dropping 7 means the qb has to wait longer for an open man, which gives the 4 more time to get'm. I really liked the Dwan Edwards deflection; midway in the 3rd quater, the Chefs moving, score only 6-0; swing pass to the rb (who was open), the ball floats out and--thump. Incomplete pass. two plays later they punt; two plays after that Mcnair to Clayton, 87 yds, td. I think the batted-down-at-the-line is the must underappreciated play in football.
given time I'm sure the Pineapple will have his rep. eating up blockers and causing penetration are hugely important, but rarely show up in the network highlight reels. It took Goose ten years to get notice.

Damn I throw away every raven loss as soon as it comes out of the recorder. I will not be so quick on the dumpster the next time
