Is Chris Chester so bad a barely average, inured Adam Terry playing out of position is a better option than the second round pick?

It's amazing how consistently Ozzie misses on 2nd and 3rd rounds picks.

Well the guy is starting tomorrow so you can get to slag him and Ozzie off all week if he stinks.

He was a better 2nd round pick than Chad Jackson in NE or the guy in Idy who was a3rd rounder and quit football after his rookie year.

I think he will be in the NFL for a long time at least. He may never turn out to be a good lineman, but most take 3 or 4 years to get strong enough for the NFL.

The thing is, he was always a project. Converted TE isn't just going to work overnight, now I'm not convinced he'll contribute to the team but people are acting like he's been a lineman all his football life.

With his size and quickness, I'd rather have seen him as a blocking TE to free Heap up for the passing patterns.
I know Cam's system needs a TE to block, but we also need Heap out as a receiver more often and Chester could have slotted him.

Interestingly he's been wearing #48 this season which means he can come in and be an eligible receiver without reporting to bring an extra blocker on the end of the line. If he starts Sunday at RG will he have to switch back to ineligble number? Not entirely sure what the rules are there?

It's pretty obvious Ozzie missed with the Chester pick.

What it shows is that he needs to stop picking projects in the 2nd and 3rd rounds and just do what he has done in the first round - pick solid football players who have proven themselves in the college ranks. You can afford to miss on a 4th or 5th round project, but those high round picks kill you when they bomb.

I heard that he was going to wear his old number...The deal with Chris Chester is that he isn't strong enough or large enough to play gaurd. He always got pushed back into the QB when he was at center...He needs to play tight end to ever have a shot of being something on this team...With all our injuries on the O-line, we are lucky to have him right now...At least he has played some O-line for us.:nerd:

Apparently when he came in at the end of the last game he had to report on every play to the oficials that he was not an eligible receiver. So I would imagine for the sake of brevity he'll be in his old number.

I just watched the Ravens Offensive Gameplan, and they showed the play where Yanda got Injured. What a screw up that play was. Anderson got schooled, tried to hold his guy, fell over, and Yanda's knee buckled as he got pushed into the prostrate Anderson.

Awful play to lose someone on.

Chester played pretty well today. Cameron used his speed and agility and got him out in space leading running plays and on screens.

He did look good, but this was a 3-4 team and he was uncovered. We will have to see how he does this week vs a 4-3 and a DT lined up right over him.

I watched him a lot, if you notice most of the pressure Flacco was facing came from the left side of the line. I didn't think that was Grubbs' best performance personally. Chester played very well, I saw him hold his ground quite a few times in pass protection when everyone else was far behind him trying to keep their man off Flacco.

I was very impressed, I hope he keeps this up. People are so quick to throw around the bust label.

Yep, Chester had an excellent day. Surprised me.

Surprised me too, and I'm really glad to see that. I hope he keeps it going!

Our O-line/smash-mouth approach, along w/ Cam's offensive playcalling, has been a real PLEASANT surprise so far this year!

I think that is a very fair comment. Against a 4 man front he will have to man up against a big tackle. I really have never thought Chester lacked talent. What he lacks is sheer strength. His losing weight to move to TE probably has not helped him in this area. He played very well yesterday and I noticed him down field quite a bit taking on the Dolphins second line of defense. He is very fast for a guard. I look forward to seeing him against Oaklands 4 man front. It may be similar to watching Mike Flynn struggle against a 3-4 where he had someone like Casey Hampton on his nose as opposed to a 4 -3 where his focus was to pick up a blitz or help on the tackles.
The reason Jason Brown is playing center (one of the reasons, at least) is that he is very powerful and has no problem matching up against a strong nose guard. Has anyone noticed that we do not seem to have the pocket collapse up the middle the way we have in the past. Brown does not give ground to the bull rush.
All that said, I have always thought that it is to early to call Chester a bust. He must get stronger and bigger but he has the ability. Here is hoping he does well against the Raiders.

Oh now doubt, Brown helps shore up the middle of that line, but with Yanda and Grubbs flanking him it was all icing on the cake. They are all strong, aggressive blockers that can shut interior guys down, and as a trio we saw a lot of that. Chester makes us weaker on the right side of that interior line on the LOS, but Cam is going to have to plan around this. Like I said earlier we saw a lot of Chester in the second level, he was pulling and leading and screening well. I thought it was a pretty decent job by Cam in using Chester's strengths to our advantage. CC found a groove as well and that helped, to begin with when we ran simple plays to the right side we weren't getting a great deal.

Chester obviously, had BY FAR his best performance as a pro. I knew I was still hopign for a reason...

I wasn't expecting much from Chester. His performance against the Dolphins was encouraging to say the least.
