According to Ray Lewis during his 1/9/07 press conference

he seems to hint at it then he says but they won the superbowl so if they do that then they can talk about it

NO Defense was as dominant or as stingy as the 2000 D.
The 2006 D has a lot to prove in the playoffs and SuperBowl if they want to be considered in that elite class.

Totally agree with Rav52.

This D is great but lets take care of business before we concern ourselves with comparisons please.

If they shut down (or close to it) Indy & SD/NE then win the SB it would certainly be a great debate to have.

Comparing the D's is hard because they are two different kinds of defense....The 2000 D was BIG, and stopped everything because you couldnt move them...The 2006 team is smaller, but much faster and athletic...Thats the reason Rex Ryan's D schemes work as well as they do....You could not run the 2006 blitz packages with the 2000 D, but they didnt need to...

Regardless: the 2006 defense has not yet demonstrated that it is equal to, and certainly not better than, the 2000 Defense. One defensive TD allowed in four 2000 season playoff games, three of them on the road - says it all.

agreed, they gotta win the big one before they can be compared to the 2000 unit. and good point bmorefan83, they are 2 different styles, 2000 was just about "we're gonna line up and kick your ass", this group is more about speed and athleticism

Yeah, let's revisit this after we win the SB.

Kill the blasphemer!

Just kidding and regardless of what Ray thinks, that 2000 unit will be hard to ever top. I really like what we have now, but that other unit had 5 (six if you count the superbowl) shutouts and the O only needed to put up 10-13 points to guarrantee a win.

No way you can compare the 2006 D to the 2000 one unless the Ravens win the Super Bowl. I will say however, that I probably view this defense in a similar way to how I looked at the 2000 D heading into the playoffs. That's the more reasonable comparison to make at this point. It's hard to compare the two without the 2006 version having its full body of work.

That 2000 defense was great in the regular season, but what it did in the postseason was legendary.

Hopefully, we can revisit this topic in February after taking another Lombardi back to Baltimore.
