View Full Version : A break from playoff stress and talk ~ '07 OC and draft?

Well, we can all use a break for a second...ok, maybe half a second.
Just curious as to whether or not people agree with me.
Billick's calling the plays right now, but we all know that's only going to last this year. I'm thinking that Rick Neuheisal will likely be promoted from QB coach to OC. You can see some of his input already in certain formations and the like not previously used. He also seems to be a favorite of the players and takes their input seriously. I'm thinking it's a shoe-in.
As for the draft, at pick 32, you never know what will be there....seeming like we'll be looking for a RB 1st day along with a QB with perhaps some CB talent if someone slips. But it's pick 32, we picked todd heap and everyone scratched their head. I'd be thrilled to have a guy like Bush drop to 32 because of concerns about his leg, but it's healed, we all know what the guy can do.
My only major concern about the future is the lack of a prospect to come in for McNair. Boller will likely be resigned for backup money (and I think he's a good backup for us...BACKUP). However, I'm not sure who we can grab down in the bottom of the 1st or 2nd. Troy Smith was a possibility, but with the way he spent his life running from Florida's line, I'm not really sure. Even so, I think he's the best prospect in terms of leadership, fitting our system, and everything you want in a QB other than a total cannon of an arm (still, it's better than pennington).
Be nice to hear thoughts from the rest of you, I know I'm no analyst.

With Troy Smith's performance, he could be the first Heisman Trophy winner to go undrafted unless he changes positions.
As for the draft, unless someone higly rated falls to 32, I would trade down from 32 into the top five of the second round for an extra 2nd rounder and 3rd rounder. I would love for us to have three 2nd round picks and potentially three 3rd round picks.

he won't go undrafted...come on now... some team will spend a 4th or 5th round pick on him.

I think there is zero chance we will grab any quarterback in the first round. Zero. And Troy Smith was singularly unimpressive in the highest-pressure game of his career. . .
If there is one appropriate for the pick, I would guess RB or CB are both positions of need, though we do have some young talent at each position. We haven't seen much of PJ Daniels this year, but I seem to recall someone (Casey?) on NST saying the team is pleased with him and he'll be around for awhile.
We could always use depth on the OL, too, if there's someone good on the board.

The Ravens love PJ. As for T Smith, Kiper not projects him as a 3rd-4th rd pick.

Excellent plan. I'd hope to see, RB, C/G, DE, BPA
A backup tackle at some point is also a must. J.O. might hang it up sooner, rather than later.

Why do you keep saying this? This is the most retarded comment ever. People don't go from the second round to out of the draft in one game. He's just short, he has all the tools.

I am thinking that if the Ravens go to the Super Bowl, Billick may continue to call plays with an OC doing the game plan. Why mess with success?
As far as the draft is concerned, I really think we need a CB, a RB and a left tackle, as I think JO's days may be numbered due to retirement.

PR , actually 3 Heisman winners went undrafted.
Pete Dawkins 1958 [Army], go to www.petedawkins.com truly a great man.
I don't believe Charlie Ward or Jason White were drafted either.

Charlie Ward wasnt drafted because he chose to play in the NBA. Good call on Jason White. He was a FA signing by TEN I think.
As far as our draft Id say OL or CB. But dont be surprised if we go LB. With Ray getting close to the end, AD possibly gone from FA and Cody not being able to get on the field our LB's could be getting thin over the next year or two.

About a month ago Decostas said Troy Smith was worth a 3rd-4th round pick. Most poster claimed Decostas was bluffing and that he will go in the 1st.
Its also insane to think he will go undrafted. He has the tools to succeed. I think many of you are judging Smith off of one game. A game in which his OLine couldnt block, Receivers couldnt get seperation, and his running game was stuffed. No College QB would have succeeded in that game including Brady Quinn and Jemarcus Russell. With that said I think Decostas got it right the 1st time in saying Troy smith was worth a 3rd-4th round pick. I predict one of the teams desperate for a QB will reach for Troy Smith in the 2nd .

Jason White was a UDFA to Ten, and retired before training camp to pursue Dentistry.
Speaking of OU, I'm intrigued by Adrian Peterson in the draft. He'll likely be there towards the end of Round 1, he's a big back with some good skills, just has a bit of the injury bug. I'd also look into OT, but maybe not Round 1. We could go after a DE/LB, with AD possibly gone in FA and Cody not quite cutting it yet.
As far as OC, it should be Neuheisel. Billick is doing a great job, so let's begin the knowledge transfer to Slick Rick. If not him, since we may also lose Rex Ryan, getting a college HC who we envision as being Billick's eventual successor might be a good plan. Ferentz and Tedford would be intriguing ideas...
