View Full Version : Whoever gets Kyle Boller Next Season...

....Could be in for a pleasant surprise.
I think Kyle is an undervalued player right now.
1) He played for years with an offensive line that didn't give him time to throw.
2) He looked good in training camp this year, better than Troy Smith.
3) I really think the kids got an unusually loooong sloooow learning curve. Most QB's are as good as they are going to get in around 3-4 years in the NFL. Kyle has learned slower than most QB's, BUT he's still improving a little bit every year. The times I saw him play early in the season he was hooking up with receivers on timing patterns well and (for the first time that I've seen) was hitting the check down back with consistency. Not only was he hitting him he was putting it on the money while the receiver was in stride. I think the game has finally slowed down enough for him. He was going through his progressions better than I've ever seen him do.
4) He's a tough guy with a good attitude. All the sacks he's taken, all the abuse he's taken from fans, and he's still a cheerleader for the Ravens and even Joe Flacco. Of all the guys on IR this year, Kyle was the one seen most often on the bench, being involved and cheering the team on.
5) Not sure if he'll ever get over throwing the bone head pick but let's face it: there are lots of QB's in the NFL who do that but make up for it with other good plays.
He may have had a rough history here but he has character and class.
My opinion: I think whoever picks him up is going to be surprised. He's going to be a better Boller than we've seen.

I wish Kyle Boller well in whatever his pursuits are in life.
He's a good dude with a big heart.
That's all you can really ask of a human being.

He is pure class. And you are right, the system, coaching and line never remotely worked for him. Hopefully some nice NFC team picks him up and he does well.

Any chance that we might re-sign him?

I would guess rather small, but not rule it out entirely if no one else offers him more money we might sign him for real cheap just to keep a #3rd QB

I don't see a chance he re-signs here either, but I agree with the original post that he seemed to finally be coming around before he got hurt. Which is why it was such a shame that he had to have a season-ending injury at that time, although it actually worked out for us because his injury, along with Troy's illness, pathed the path for Flacco to start 19 games in his rookie season.
But getting back to Boller, it'll be interesting to see where he ends up. Someone will sign him, as a backup I'm sure, so maybe he'll get some playing time next year and we can see how he does. I'd like to see him do well, but I also realize his good training camp and preseason could have been a mirage.

Agree, and a couple of observations.
1) and a bunch of receivers who couldn't catch much.
3) hopefully is was the speed of the game and not learning a new system.
5) have to look no further than Warner at the end of the SB
He is a solid dude in my book and wish him well where ever he is/goes.
He could still have a long career as a Ferotte type and maybe even emerge as Collins did this year or the other Collins did last year.

I'd say it's very slim, but not impossible. Boller would have to compete with a few other FAs out there for a #2 job elsewhere: Simms, possibly Cassel (more likely a #1), Leftwich, Grossman, maybe Garcia and/or McCown, Ramsey, Fitzpatrick. If there are no OTA injuries producing unexpected vacancies, or unanticipated retirements, or if the other FAs beat Kyle out with other teams, and if Kyle were to swallow his pride to take a vet minimum deal instead of going out of the NFL, I could see the Ravens interested in him over Bauman. Not to resurrect the Smith/Boller debates, but is the coaching staff confident in Smith to do anything but trick plays? i.e., if Flacco were to go down for more than one game, would we be better off having a seasoned vet on the bench with substantial NFL starter experience? (Same argument could apply to Leftwich, Ramsey, etc.)

Again. Zero chance.
And that's looking at it from both sides. Anyone think Boller wants to come back?

We're splitting hairs trying to disguinsh between a slim chance and zero chance, but as far as Boller not wanting to come back, that's probably true but then again, a lot of people were surprised when he signed an extension two years ago.

That and for whatever reason at the post-season presser Steve Bisciotti went out of his way to complement Kyle and talk about how important he was to the organization.
The thing is, and the reason PP is right, is that what do you do with him? Flacco is your starter, and Smith is your backup. Unless Troy Smith is getting cut, which I don't see happening, Boller won't resign to be a 3rd string QB.
Logistically it doesn't make sense.
That said, I hope he catches on somewhere and makes something of himself. He got beat up worse than he needed to here. Not as good as he needed to be, but not as bad as was made out to be.

Stinger, that's one of the best descriptions of Boller I've heard or read yet.

Boller won't be a Raven next year. Average arm, average overall ability, .....but one of the toughest SOB's I've ever seen in Purple & Black. He was hit SO hard, SO many times, you started feeling sorry for him, but he ALWAYS got up! He had (has) the heart of a lion. I wish him all the luck in the world.

I agreed with this up until you said he always got up. He has missed playing 3 times due to injuries from what i remember (and there may have been more). Boller just wasnt any good and he was getting hurt back there.
The thing is he was a stand up guy and he did have a huge heart. Unfortunately he doesnt have the ability. If he latches on with a team and he is successful with them i would be really surprised but I certainly wouldnt wish him any type of luck (you only get that from me if you are a Raven)

Boller was a standup guy who never blamed anyone except himself, he never put anyone else in the fire. I wish the man well in his future, he was one of the nicest guys I have ever met on the Ravens.

i don't see us re-signing Boller, unless he gets no quality offers. Troy is a better #2 to have because we can use him in the Suggs package. Doubt we'd spend the money Boller would want to make him a #3 here, nor do I think he'd want to be a #3 here.
He'll get a #2 or possibly a fighting chance to start somewhere else.

agree wi all the above. he's gone, we wish him the best; and he might surprise somebody. there sure is a lot of need out there for qb, esp wi some experience. KC? Jets? Raiders?

The only way Kyle Boller comes back next year or any year is if Troy Smith is gone from the team. Just my 2 cents.

Harbaugh spoke highly of Boller and his commitment to the team. I'd say there is still a small chance he could be back depending on what kind of attention he gets from other teams.

I tend to agree.
Barring Boller getting a real good opportunity to either compete for a starting gig or outright being handed the keys somewhere, I could see him being back here.

Our Boller days may not be over. The Ravens may offer him a contract simply because he will be cheap coming off that shoulder injury. With Cam's new offense and better protection keeping Boller around may not be a bad idea. Of course there are teams who will need a QB this season so Boller will not be without options but the Ravens may still be attractive to him.

Personally, I think he is a great guy and teammate. I really wish him well when he leaves here, unless he became a steeler:hammer:
I just don't seem him coming back though. I think he gave Anita Marks the goods and wants to get as far away as he can from her, he was probably drunk and had to wake up next to that sack of shit.:grbac: I think that is his only regret about Baltimore.:D

I honestly think he will be back. As a backup QB he has played admirably. He is definitely a stand up guy.
I do not think Troy will be back. He is still an unproven commodity in the NFL and he wants to start. What has he ever done in the NFL? Now, I will say I thought he was going to be our starter this year. I'm glad he was not.
So what do you want as your backup, God forbid if Flacco goes down, a serviceable QB or an unproven commodity?

I was also glad. I do not think that Smith is NFL starting material. However, he has to come back, due to economics. His 5th rounder salary - around 1/2 million, helps make room for higher priorities, i.e. Suggs, Brown, Lewis, Leonhard.
Also, the current NFL vogue of trick plays. Even though our "Suggs package" rarely worked, we need it to keep defenses off balance.
So what do you want as your backup, God forbid if Flacco goes down, a serviceable QB or an unproven commodity?
I agree. I'd be much more comfortable with a seasoned vet. But only if the marketplace winds up getting Boller back at a price equal to or lower than Bauman's salary.
