Wide Receiver

Plaxico Burress/UFA - nope times infinity
Marvin Harrison/UFA - old times infinity
Jerry Porter/UFA - not good times infinity
D.J. Hackett/UFA - maybe, not impact guy but could be nice depth
Drew Bennett/UFA - see above
Reggie Williams/UFA - nope, just not that good
Matt Jones/UFA - cokehead, nope
Amani Toomer/UFA - too old
Malcom Floyd/RFA/San Diego Chargers - interesting...if he's a RFA, he's probably already re-signed. If he's a UFA now, I'd take a shot on him, reunite him with Cam
Mike Furrey/UFA - not interested
Marty Booker/UFA - not interested
Joe Jurevicius/UFA - too many injuries
Ike Hilliard/UFA - not interested
Shaun McDonald/UFA - not interested
Koren Robinson/UFA - too many head problems
Ashley Lelie/UFA - depth possibility, not that good though
Darrell Jackson/UFA - nah
Keary Colbert/UFA - maybe, but again, not that good
Justin McCareins/UFA - intriguing, has he done that much since he went to the Jets?
Drew Carter/UFA - not too much
Brandon Lloyd/UFA - Pretty sure he went to Chicago
Kelley Washington/UFA - nope
Robert Ferguson/UFA - maybe
Dane Looker/UFA - no
Dante Hall/UFA - have enough return guys
Cliff Russell/UFA - who?
Tab Perry/UFA - have enough ST guys

Brandon Lloyd was on the Bears last year (from wash).
UFA now and I don't think the bears are going to re-sign him.
Think they learned the same things that his previous teams learned. He can have a game where you think he is great, then he disappears the next couple of games. He will look good for maybe 4 games for us, and worthless the other 12 (15 :) )

i think we should pick up marvin harrison, yeah, he's old. yeah, he's not as good as he used to be. i think we could use his services and he may make a few plays for us, but more importantly he would be able to mentor our younger WR's on how to play the position. playing with marvin would raise our WR's from physical specimens to above-average WR's with a HOF mentor at practice every day.

HOFer or not, I don't like Harrison for the Ravens. His best days are behind him and as far as mentoring, I'd tell the young boys to look at Mason. Playing last year through his shoulder injury, thats Raven style football. I liked the Boldin trade idea, but thats only because D. Williams can't stay healthy. Who was our slot guy late in the season...? Marcus Smith. He has the size, but he just wasn't open. I think that if 87 can stay healthy, we can get good production in the passing game.

I think Lloyd is with the Lions now...

I'd take Hackett.

As a college football coach, I believe that we are fine at wide receiver. We have a proven vet in Mason and Clayton showed flashes of his potential last year so lets see if he can improve on last year. We also have Demetrius Williams, who if healthy could be a star. Also we have young speedy receiver in Figurs. We also have three receivers that were rookies last year in Marcus Smith, Justin Harper and Ernie Wheelwright. Lets give them a chance to improve and see if they have solid years after a rookie campaign. We also have Marcus Maxwell that we picked up off waivers from Cincy and has a lot of potential. With the signing of undrafted rookie free agents Isiah Williams and Eron Riley I believe we are set at receivers. Yes if there is a receiver who is released before camp or after camp who is an upgrade then you look at him but I blieve we are set. This is a nice young core of receivers and it will help them out tremendously with having Heap, LJ Smith and Sypnewski. It is also going to help having Oher, Gaither, Anderson and Terry so that we can let Heap and LJ Smith go out and catch the ball. I think we are set and we are going to go far this year. We improved not only our oline but our wide receivers aswell just by drafting Oher. LETS GO RAVENS!

As a college football coach,

I would seriously love to hear how you got into that...

More specifically this ... I've never played organized football at any level, but I would do anything I could to get into coaching. How would I do that?

(high school would be a fine start)

To get into college coaching it's a pretty good idea to become a Graduate Assistant. Other than that, go to school and get a degree in PE then work the high school level for a few years then send out your resume.

I am only 22 years old and I am a position coach at a DII school. I went to get my masters in athletic coaching at a big college and volunteered with their football team. Upon graduating I interviewed for a couple jobs and got lucky and got hired at a DII school. Coaching is hard to get into and you just have to bust your ass and talk to whoever and volunteer at first. I love coaching but I want to get into scouting at the NFL level so I hope that this will someday lead to that. It is awesome to wake up everyday and know that your job is to coach football.

Keep working at it. This is a dream worht holding on to, and it seems you are on your way at a young age.

Thanks guys. And I hope to represent Baltimore well.

Now from watching Jon Beck play....what do you guys think about signing him? I think being young and knowing Camerons offense alittle, he would fit well on this team since I dont think Troy Smith is going to be here past this year because he thinks he can start somewhere. Beck could be the long term answer at backup QB. Id rather see him in there than Todd Bouman if god forbid Flacco gets hurt

I'm not a big fan of Beck and thought he was a reach when the Phins took him in '07. Much like Ginn was a reach. Generally I think Smith thinks he can start, but will quickly realize he isn't viewed as a starter, and that we'll give him good money to come back and be a role player with us. I don't know that he'll go anywhere. Plus, he probably can't next year anyway...the CBA opt-out means he's not tenured enough to be a FA.

Beck vs. Bauman to me becomes a question of whether or not we care enough if it comes to that. At that point, we're screwed anyway, and Bauman at least knows our system well.

The other piece is that Parcells gave him the boot. That's far from a ringing endorsement. It's one thing if Matt Millen lets you walk. Parcells dropping a second round QB after two years IMO has to send up warning flags.

Beck wasn't Parcells guy, and Parcells came in and immediately rebuilt the QB position, before even eyeballing the kid. Pennington and Henne in the first year, Pat White the second year. You are correct that it's nto a ringing endorsement, but by no means does it say the kid can't play.

I agree with coach. The Ravens should keep an eye on the wire, but I do not see any names out there that would obviously upgrade Clayton who I think is a playmaker and a poor mans Steve Smith or maybe more like a young Derrick Mason.

I would love to be scout and eventually a GM, but my plan is to make Al Davis an offer he cant refuse like he was Mo Green.

I mean I know all the Ravens fans want us to improve our receiving core to help out Flacco but lets give it one more year and see if these guys cant grow with Flacco. Yeah it would be nice to add a big name receiver like boldin but I am going into the season with hope that atleast one of the group of Clayton, Williams, Marcus Smith, Justin Harper, Ernie Wheelwright, Marcus Maxwell and the undrafted rookie free agents make huge strides and help Flacco out. We all know Mason will be there to make those catches so we just need acouple more of those guys to help us out. It will also help out tremendously that Heap and LJ Smith will be able to go out and make catches and not sit in and block like Heap had to last year.

Well, supposedly we offered a contract to Kelly Washington. Dont know that for sure, but that's what I heard.

Out of the rest of those guys...it ain't pretty.

Darrell Jackson, Amani Toomer, Drew Bennett, and DJ Hackett would be the guys I went to first.

Reggie Williams, Matt Jones, and Plax are facing jail time.

Marvin Harrison is old as sin and who knows what's going on with those gun charges from Philly.

Mike Furrey is no different than Mark Clayton, probably a lot slower.

Joe Jurevicious hasn't played a healthy season in 2 years.

Jerry Porter has some big injury concerns.

Malcom Floyd is interesting, but I wouldnt want to give up anything for anyone at this point. Plus, it's arguable that Jackson or Hackett would be just as effective as Floyd and no draft pick would have to be relinquished for them.

Everyone else might as well not play football anymore.

I would take DJ Hackett in a heartbeat. DJackson and Koren about 3 years ago. Wait and see on Plax...although if we could get him REALLY cheap I would "risk" on him now.

I like Hackett a lot also, but hasn't he missed the last two season - or part of them - due to injuries?

He doesnt appear to be a very healthy WR.

I don't have all the stats in front of me (and too lazy to look right now ;) ) but I think he was hurt last year..but had his good year in 2007? Still pretty young and would be very reliable when healthy.

Yea, I remember him having some good outings with Seattle, but then he got hurt part of the 07 season too.

He's worth a look-see.

If he stays healthy he is at least a 6'2" 210lbs red-zone target.

Ya he is pretty big. He seemed to have a lot of TDs in the 30 yards and less range that one year. Give us a little different option other than the clones of Mason and Clayton.
