G Ben Grubbs is an alternate. Not sure I agree with that, but I still don't think he sucks as bad as some of you do.
Congratulations to everyone! :happyanim

That's surprising. I don't think he sucks he just hasn't been that dominate guard a lot of us expected him to be by now.

Ngata's unsportslike play this season has me on the fence about his selection, although he deserves to go based on last year's performance alone.

Suggs, Birk, Grubbs and Zibby named as alternates.
Maybe Suggs can turn this "snub" into motivation this offseason. He basically threw his jersey on the field this year - he doesn't even deserve the alternate nod.
Congrats to the starters! As far as pure fullbacks go, I don't know if McClain is deserving, but still is a very good player.
Very excited to see Ray Rice and Haloti getting recognition from their peers and fans.
Go Ravens!

Here's the official press release...
FIVE RAVENS NAMED TO PRO BOWL
Five Baltimore Ravens were voted to the Pro Bowl, the NFL announced Tuesday evening. LB Ray Lewis, S Ed Reed, FB Le’Ron McClain, DT Haloti Ngata and RB Ray Rice were selected to play in the NFL’s All-Star game, which will be held on Jan. 31, 2010, in Miami’s Dolphin Stadium.
LB Ray Lewis (11th Pro Bowl – Starter)
Tabbed as a starter for the AFC squad, Lewis was named to the 11th Pro Bowl of his 14-year career. He has recorded a team-high 152 tackles through 15 games this season, adding three sacks, six passes defensed, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery for the Ravens’ No. 3-ranked defense.
“This is always an honor,” Lewis stated. “I don’t take it for granted. To be recognized by your peers, the coaches and the fans is a privilege.”
S Ed Reed (6th Pro Bowl – Starter)
Reed, who was also selected as a starter for the AFC, was named to the sixth Pro Bowl of his eight-year career. Though he has missed the Ravens’ past four games with a groin injury, Reed has totaled 51 tackles (47 solo), three forced fumbles and three interceptions for 111 yards this season, including a 52-yard touchdown return.
FB Le’Ron McClain (2nd Pro Bowl – Starter)
McClain was named to the second Pro Bowl of his three-year career as the AFC’s starting fullback. This season, he has helped pave the way for the Ravens’ seventh-ranked rushing attack that is averaging 130.7 yards per game and has produced 19 touchdowns on the ground.
DT Haloti Ngata (1st Pro Bowl – Starter)
Selected to his first-ever Pro Bowl, Ngata has been a staple on the defensive line by producing 40 tackles, 1.5 sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery for Baltimore’s sixth-ranked run defense (96.1 yards per game). With Ngata’s help, the Ravens also rank first in average yards allowed per rush (3.5).
“I’ve been working so hard to be one of the best ever since I entered the NFL,” Ngata said. “This is unbelievably gratifying and a great honor. As a player in college, you just want to get to the league. If you’re fortunate enough to make it to this level, everyone then dreams of going to the Pro Bowl.
“Without the other D-lineman on our team, I wouldn’t be able to do the things I do,” Ngata added. “I’m thankful for guys like Kelly Gregg, who has taught me so much about technique and been a great role model. Trevor Pryce, Justin Bannan and Dwan Edwards have helped me grow, and they push me every day. Coach [Clarence] Brooks is somebody who makes me better and constantly demands the best out of me. None of this is possible without any of these guys, so that’s why this is a group award.”
RB Ray Rice (1st Pro Bowl)
In just his second season, Rice earns his first Pro Bowl nod after tallying 1,952 total yards from scrimmage (second in the NFL) through 15 games. He currently leads the Ravens with 1,269 rushing yards and 74 receptions (for 683 yards). His 1,269 rushing yards stand sixth in the NFL, while he has also produced at least 100 total net yards from scrimmage in 12 of 15 games.
“This is such an honor,” Rice stated. “Even though I’m going as an individual, I consider this a team award. I want to thank all my teammates and coaches who have made this possible. Growing up, I dreamed of playing in the NFL, but making the Pro Bowl is surreal. I’ve always played the game in hopes of earning other people’s respect, and knowing that the fans, coaches and players voted for me is humbling. I promise to represent the Ravens organization and City of Baltimore by continuing to do nothing but my best.”
Alternate Note: One Raven who did not make the Pro Bowl but was selected as a first alternate was G Ben Grubbs. Grubbs would receive an invitation if a player in front of him cannot attend due to injury.
Congrats to all of them. Rice and Ngata are well deserved!
Anyone else noticed that DeSean Jackson made it as a WR and KR. Dude has been on fire all season.

Cant believe Zibby is an alternate, has it been a down year for safeties?

I was particularly glad to see that Rice & Ngata made it, and Zib as an alternate - wow! I question McLain repeating this season.
The only disappointment is Johnson. Give Flacco another year or two.
I can think of at least 3 guys from the Bengals that should have made it....they were robbed IMO...

I can see Rice, Lewis and Ngata for sure...but Ed Reed?
Sorry, but no way Reed deserves this honor.
He has 3 pix and a fumble recovery...and has missed 4 games.
How does this equate to a Pro-bowl season?
Anyone recall the botched punt return vs Indy?

Reed has had a down year by his standards. But look at this stats:
45 tackles, 5 PD, 3 INT (1 returned for a TD 52 yards), 111 INT yards, 3 FF, 1 FR.
Pretty solid statsfor a FS. Any other FS with those stats would have been in. Like I said dow year by his standards but still better than 80% of all the other safeties in the NFL.

15th best run blocking TE, and 1st best pass blocking TE. He is also listed as the 3rd best TE overall.
I think Heap is better than 15th place for run blocking. A lineman will beat Heap most of the time, but I haven't seen too many linebackers getting off Heap's blocks on running plays.

How does a HC allow one of his players to play in the probowl then have to be ready for the superbowl the following week? I wouldn't want Fitzgerald out there running around and possibly pull a hammy before the superbowl. Or have Manning out there and some 340 pound Ngata step on his foot and break it. This is the stupidest idea to have the probowl the week before the superbowl. Where the freak have I been to not know that this was the case? I knew they was going to have it in Florida this year but I didn't know it was the week before. What goofball came up with that idea?

Good call on JJ. He to me with all due respect to Ray, has been the best player on our D this year. Like AD before him, he is just a football player and a damn fine one. People who understand the game know JJ should have been a Pro Bowler.

I actually like the idea. The probowl has always been a joke, and basically just a way to give multi-millionares an all expense paid trip to Honolulu. It's still a joke, but now more people may watch as it becomes part of the two week long Superbowl celebration. Obviously those players that are playing in the Superbowl won't play, but a lot of guys never played in the old format.

I don't like it, I think people vote for the players they want to see play. I also think it takes away from the probowl and mashes the superbowl and probowl together. Now I don't think the probowl is all that special, I think they should just treat the probowl like an all decade team or something like that. The players would get selected but no one would actually play the game rather then squeeze it in superbowl week.
I wonder how many starters will just opt out just because they moved it to the mainland.

Suggs, alternate -NYET!!!!!!!!!!!!! You just took up space this year, my friend!
Also, don't necessarily agree with selection of Reed.

I agree about JJ. His time is coming though. As does the time of most LBs who play next to #52.
Joe Flacco? I can only hope. But with Manning, Brady and Rivers leading the pack and Roethlisberger, Palmer and Schaub firmly entrenched at the second level, Joe is going to have to improve dramatically to make the Pro Bowl.
I didn't even mention the emerging cats like Vince Young, who finally seems to have flipped the switch that will allow him to reach the elite level of the most challenging position.
Our guy is going to have to bust his ass to perform at that level consistently.

Meh. I don't think it matters much one way or the other. The honor is being picked. Nobody has ever cared about the game itself. With it being moved to the week before the Superbowl, I *might* even watch it this year. I would imagine the players from the teams going to the Superbowl would not be expected to even show up. Could you imagine if Cincinnati faced Minnesota (just a scenario - I don't think either is going)? With 8 players from one team being distracted with pro-bowl nonsense, and the entire other team spending that entire time preparing for the real game.

What I have seen from Heap int eh Run Blocking arena is exactly what you mention... except that he is VERY poor in space. He hardly ever finds his assignment and ends up whiffing completely when asked to move and find a block on a screen or pitch or quick wide run in general.
He has been improving as a pass blocker steadily for two years.

What? Nope. If they are not injuried or not to dissapointed with a loss, they are playing, ex. the winners like Manning, Wayne and Saturday and others after their win in the 2006-2007 season, they played in the PB 2007.
Next year Randy and Brady missed, but many other Patriots did play.. Like Koppen, Ligth, Vrabel and Wilfork and so on.

Bailey's had a terrific year this year.
I agree about Johnson.
He's had a great season.

He's been our best defensive player. Maybe Ngata, who other than a couple penalties that were him being a little over-aggressive, has truly been dominant.
I can see Rice, Lewis and Ngata for sure...but Ed Reed?
Sorry, but no way Reed deserves this honor.
I agree completely. I think he's been as much a liability as a play-maker, and shouldn't be anywhere near this roster. Polamalu deserves it before Reed right now.
There are "snubs," but I don't think there are a whole lot of guys other than Reed that I'd say don't belong on the roster. A couple quibbles maybe but nothing blatantly off-base.

I'd have taken either of the Bengals over Bailey but he wasn't too bad a pick.
Ngata I just can't agree with at all. He's not been dominant in the run game, and he's been poor as a pass rusher. Gregg out performed him for my money.

Bailey's had a terrific year this year.
Johnathan Joseph: 66 tackles, no sacks, 1 forced fumble, 6 INT's
Leon Hall: 67 tackles, no sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 6 INT's
Darrel Revis: 54 tackles, no sacks, no forced fumbles, 6 INT's
Champ Bailey: 72 tackles, no sacks, 1 forced fumble, 3 INT's
Nnamdi Asomugha: 34 tackles, no sacks, no forced fumbles, 1 INT.
effo5231
12-30-2009, 05:48 PM
Cornerback numbers are MASSIVELY misleading. Nnamdi is universally considered the best pure cover corner since Deon Sanders.... his numbers are low because the ball doesn't get anywhere near him.
I don't watch enough film on corners not wearing purple to speak intelligently about Champ's year, but the fact is I doubt he's being thrown at often and that is one of the reasons his numbers are low.
You are correct, but that will be no different than always. No superbowl team players have EVER played in the pro bowl, that I can recall, even when it was after!
Thats not right. You must not pay alot of attention to the pro bowl, like most people.
