Ray Lewis hit on Austin Collie (http://www.profootball24x7.com/column_view.php?cid=33&id=4246&view=archive)

this is bullshit. honestly what would the NFL like for Ray to have done in that situation? touch him with 2 hands and let him catch the ball for a TD and say nice play? Lewis did the only thing he could and should do on that play, he hit Collie as hard as he could and knocked the ball out. you come across the middle to catch a ball you have to expect to get knocked out especially when #52 is learking in the middle

 If that would have been a true helmet to helmet hit, Collie would have still been lying on the ground with a concussion! He got right up and the ref who called the penalty was behind Lewis..Ray led with his shoulder and Collie's head snapped back as Ray was following through! How could Lewis have known that Collie didn't have the ball? He was making a good hit to jar the ball out of Collie's hands to prevent a TD! I guess a 260 pound man, now has to apply the brakes as he's in mid-air making a hit  This call was BS!!:grbac::thumbdown:

The game is changing guys.

Everybody keeps complaining about it, and talking about intentions and all.

The game has changed.

If there is helmet to helmet hit on a 'defenseless player', they are going to call it...what the player meant to do doesn't mean squat.

Save yourselves some frustration and just let it go. The league is worried about any potential liabilities that go with head injuries so they are being extra cautious.

At least there was actually helmet contact this time, unlike the hit on OchoCinco.

Ray hit Dallas Clark on the opening drive. That hit was more deserving of a penalty than his hit on Collie. And neither are penalties in my mind.

Just be glad we a)finally have a QB and b)won't lose our 165pt. record for a long long time. The NFL will not stop until the average game looks like Packers v. Cards.

Certainly understand and respect the NFL wanting to protect ALL players (not just QBs). And I don't need these guys having brain damage all their lives just to entertain me for a while on a few Sundays every year.

The problem I have is with making any kind of penalty absolute. There has to be recognition of the offensive players role in causing the contact. IMO a H2H hit puts both players in danger, not just the offensive player. So the penalty needs to be equally possible to blame on a WR, in situations where that happens.

If the QB unloads a "hospital throw", then in my view, if that leads to an accidental helmet clash, the penalty should go to the offense. I'd call it The Shitty Throw Rule.

Ironically, a lot of this defenseless recevier stuff wouldn't be an issue if they'd let defenders play D down the field. You have shitloads of open receivers all over the place (unless you're the Ravens) because of all the ticky tack rules about 5-yard contact and PI for every little graze and whiff. If they'd let the secondary play D the whole play -- instead of forcing them to wait until after the ball touches the WR before being allowed to take any kind of defensive action -- they'd probably cut out a lot of these situations just like that. You don't see these called on running plays much, only on downfield passes. Hmmmmm... maybe there's too much passing allowed, and it's hurting the WRs. Food for thought. Course, if they did that, the powder-puff teams with their phony HOF QBs couldn't rack up the endorsement money, so that's not likely to happen. The NFL will probably try to solve its injury problems by making the game even MORE one sided.

Yes, you have summarized the situation pretty well here, but what does a defensive player do in that situation? Stand there and watch? Personally, I think players are going to have to lead with their asses in order to avoid helmet to helmet contact.

Interesting point. I had never thought of it that way. At the end of the day though, this is what the league wants...

Preston criticizes the fine....FOR BEING TOO LOW!

He said it should've been double because Lewis is a "repeat offender"

While I didn't agree with the penalty, I was ok with a 5k fine. It's the equivalent of a slap on the wrist and almost like a "we have to penalize you because your helmets hit, but it wasn't intentional" But saying it should be more for a "late, helmet to helmet hit" is ridiculous. It was a borderline call and I see nothing in replays indicating it was intentional or flagrant going for the head.

You know, I criticize Preston's IQ on that exact same basis.

Yup. The League is understandable concerned with the health of their players, but I believe they are using concussions as a means to an end. Meaning, they want a passing league, more scoring, and this is how they are justifying it. Look for more of the same...

I think the fine was also residue from Ray calling out the NFL after the Patriots regular season game. You can't fight City Hall...5K ain't bad given what they usually dole out.

Really a bad call, and an even worse decision to issue a fine. I was surprised to see Preston say he thought he should have been fined more being the old school guy that he is.

Preston ALWAYS talks down about Ray Lewis...I think he hates him cause Ray made it to the NFL and knows football..Just because he played football in college, covers sports, and writes for a newspaper, Preston thinks he knows football and still dreams of playing in the NFL:eyes:
