View Full Version : nascar racing down our throats

Is any one else sick and tired, already, of ESPN's effort to cram nascar down our throats? Now, I know, some of you are or may be fans, but I for one, am not. At All. Not one mite. Can't stand it! Don't watch it! Won't! Can't! In typical ESPN fashion, they have crammed it down our throats at every possible occasion. Outside the lines, PTI, Around the horn, NFL live.... everywhere. THEN..... taking off pti and ath to have a DAILY nascar show? Well, I've had it. The money grubbing bastards will not find me in their neilson ratings! I REFUSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :insane: :hammer:  :bag: :bag: :bag: :bag: :bag: :bag: :bag: :bag: :bag: :bag: :bag: :bag: :bag:

NASCAR is also boring as hell....wooo cars going around in an oval all day.

Give me Le Mans, GT3, Formula-1, Fia-GT, Rally-cars

Something that's interesting, takes skill, and actually has new technology. Well, and now, less substantially less cheating.

alright, there is drafting, fighting with Tony Stewart, everyone hoping...waiting for the massive accident where hopefully no one gets hurt.

I just find it boring.

Paint drying, grass growing, rocks aging and Jello forming. All far far more interesting than nascar "racing"

Add me to the list of people who don't get the obsession. It's even worse than soccer or baseball in terms of excitement. It's one of the few "sports" where there's no permanent scoring (inside the confines of one game/match). A home run, a touchdown, a layup, a goal, a strike, an ace, a hole in one... it happens, it gets recorded, it's there for good. Car racing? No matter how much of a lead you build up, it can be wiped out, completely, by something completely outside the competitor's control (any sort of car trouble). How stupid is that?

I get that all races share basically the same "scoreless" property, where nothing that happens matters until someone crosses the finish line. But most watchable races (sprints, horse racing, speed skating, swimming, whatever) go on for a few minutes at most. What's the equivalent to car racing? A marathon! Raise your hand if you want to watch a marathon.

Okay, hands down.

I just don't get the appeal, beyond the stereotypical "go to a stadium and drink beer all day, then get in a fight with your buddies later about who should have won". As if people need an excuse to drink beer all day.

And the defining moment of any race isn't the finish, it's the biggest accident. It's not really comparable to a brawl in other sports, since those don't just happen unintentionally... someone throws the first punch. But in auto racing, a slight mistake can knock a dozen people out of the race and possibly seriously injure or kill them, along with wrecking their vehicle and forcing tons of repairs. Who thought this was a good idea?

I have nothing against NASCAR, but I do resent the typical ESPN over-the-top treatment of it. They didn't care about it at all until they picked it up, but now that they televise it, they can't stop talking about it. They knocked Around the Horn and Pardon the Interuption off the air for TWO WEEKS just so they can jerk off about NASCAR.

A lot of people like it -- that's fine. But I'm not one of them, and I find the recent coverage really annoying. It's yet another example of ESPN going overboard promoting their own product.

Rochardrik

Be careful it can and will become addicting. It really is more than driving around in circles!
No, it will not become addicting. Only more tiresome, more boring, more TASTELESS!!!!!.....:bag: I have defected. I will not watch espn, except for games. And even there they are trying to sneak it in, by use of promos, etc. Espn, the greedy bastards, are ONLY carrying it because they want some of the HUGE money it generates. All of a sudden it is a sport. No, it isn't. No, I'm sorry, it isn't!!!!!!:hammer: :insane:

AMEN! I will not criticize fans of nascar, though I'd like to, but come on, it's a circle jerk, with uninteresting players, boring inaction, and "train wrecks" , just sooooo bad!!!!

So really, most of us are just upset with ESPN...not surprising.

ESPN is all about show and hype over function and quality analysis. Good example? Prime time "B" team. For once I agree with Zimmerman

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/dr_z/02/08/announcers/index.html

Why are they the "B" team? They're less flashy, but flash doesn't always mean better.

Sure debate NASCAR talk about the cheating, but you can do that on the shows you already have without going over the top...and not everyone wants all NASCAR.

Typical ESPN! They lose the NHL and the league fails to exist, they lose NASCAR a couple of years ago and that league fails to exist. Nobody is better at self-promotion (insert Nestor cracks) than ESPN. Pretty soon Nascar and Poker will have their own ESPN station.

Mark me down as a non-fan of Nascar as well. I went to a few races down in Charlotte, NC back in my younger days in the mid-1980s. It was fun at the time, but mostly because it was just an excuse to drink beer all day.

Something that's been bothering me almost as much as all the NASCAR on TV lately is TELEVISED POKER. It's on ESPN, ESPN2, BRAVO, CMT, and a few other stations as well. I'm sorry, to me poker is not a spectator sport, unless a buddy of mine is playing - with his own money. To make matters worse, most of these poker shows include players that the announcers assume we all know very well. Sorry, I've never heard of any of them, nor do I want to. If I'm going to watch a poker game, I'll drive to Atlantic City first and watch middle income people gambling with their own money. Not exactly exciting either, but far better than watching some rich no-name on ESPN.

There's so much hype with NASCAR right now because it's the BIGGEST race of the year..The Daytona 500....It's opening day for race fans. It's like the first footbal game of the year for football fans..I never used to like it or get into either until a buddy of mine took me to a race and explained everything from it's history to drafting to drivers to pit stops!

It was really wild when I went to Dover for the first time and stood at the fence and felt the cars go about 160-175 mph, you could feel the power! They would go 500 miles in a straight line if it were feasible..It's very hard to comprehend going that fast and being inches next to another car. Changing tires and getting enough fuel to last until the next pit stop...Like I said, I never understood it and I hated it because I was ignorant it's schematics...So don't knock it till you try it! :nerd:

2: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Angelos

A 12 year old kid who thinks he's the hottest thing in the world for screwing over the O's in 1996 and fortunately flamed out and wasn't even drafted in 2006 after becoming Wesleyan's all time hits leader.

A fairly decent personal injury lawyer that hit the asbestos gravy train that seems to think he can manage a professional sports team as well as litigation and a decade later still seems to believe he can do it.

Rocks aging...good one. But accurate.

I can't watch it. I briefly went out with a girl who had her truck (go figure) plastered with her boy's number. I used to think people who did this were advertising their IQ. Then I learned I was right.

What kills me is if their boy drives a Ford, they must drive a Ford and by default they must hate Chevys, even though what's on the track bears no resemblance to the vehicles on the road.

That and the praise that is heaped on the drivers - and the drivers alone - when the guys who build the cars and maintain them are more responsible for who wins than anyone. Kinda like Manning getting MVP when really it is the invisible OL that wins the games.

Really, I have tried to see the attraction, but I can't. I watched a race for 30 minutes once and I'm still wanting that 30 minutes of my life back. My God, what a bore.

One other thing - what other sport stages its premeire event as the first event of the year? Think of the Super Bowl in September. Dumb.

I have an idea. Play poker *while* driving in circles. That would be cool. Each guy could have a video screen just to the right of the speedometer, and buttons to control when to hit, or call, or whatever. Something involving a "river" card.

My point being, *that's* something I'd watch.

I don't really care about them promoting it because it's their station.

I don't watch golf, tennis, baseball, basketball (outside of the play-offs/March Madness), bowling or pretty much any "sport" besides football. It doesn't annoy me when they're on TV.

I hate every show on CBS. They advertise the crap out of them during Ravens games yet that doesn't bother me because, once again, it's their station.

As for NASCAR? The ability to turn left doesn't make you an athlete. It just means you're smarter than most other rednecks.

I have tried it, it just gets worse and worse. I have an asphalt paving company... about 110 employees. Probably 85 of them are fans. They are ready to fight at the drop of the hat if you make a disparaging remark about #8, or #13 or whoever. They spend scads of money buying the most tacky souveneirs, and think their nascar tailgating somehow equates to our football tailgates. I just keep my mouth shut... About 5 years ago during one of my Ocean City quests I passed through Dover during their June event. I was amazed by the Campers and Flags. I was hooked, it reminded me of College Football all the Colors and all. Went to a Race totally enjoyed it. Don't fancy myself as a Redneck, but if a Redneck is defined by liking NASCAR then I'm guilty as charged.

Like Darby said ESPN is promoting NASCAR because they spent cash out the wazzoo to carry the sport, just like when they started Sunday Night Football, they kicked Sunday Night Baseball to the curb in such a fasion the MLB threatened to sue them.

NASCAR has filled a bigger whole in my Sporting Life because it bridges the gap by starting a couple weeks after the Super Bowl and continues through the first half of the NFL Season. NASCAR has taken all my Orioles money, hats, Races, Die Casts etc... Still an Orioles fan, haven't totally dumped them, but I'm one of the growing numbers who will not give Peter Angeblows another penny.

Their tailgates certainly are equal to ours. My brother got free tickets and he was amazed. He said you have to go to "get it". They sell headsets that allow you to listen in to the communcation between the pit crews and the driver live. He said you have no idea how fast they are going unless you are there.

I apologize, That was not my intent! I started this thread to complain about ESPN cramming it down our throats! It's fine that they want to carry it! To each his own, etc. But they were, and are, cramming it down our throats. It has appeared in EVERY thing they have broadcast for the last few weeks! I don't appreciate it! Again, show it, people who like it will watch! Just don't force me to watch coverage on shows that have nothing to do with it! They used to poo-poo it on PTI, Around the horn, Now they discuss it like they watch it, or know what they're talking about! And it is not hard to figure out what they are trying to do, promote interest in it, because NOW they are carrying races(GREED)... (we gotta get in on this money tree!) I shop at walmart, because it is close, and I am well educated, enough to notice that 50% or more of the shoppers wear Steeler hats and nascar jackets, therefore the comment! Sorry!:rolleyes:But, After all, you are right, I do not respect nascar fans. I should change that! And saying highly educated nascar fans, just seems like an oxymoron! I'm not saying that I'm right, it's just how i have always felt! Maybe it was because all the nascar fans i know were, well, NOT!!!!

Televised Chess rules.

I also may buy 'Great Hurling Moments of the 90's' on DVD.

NASCAR's not my cup of tea. I used to really be into Indy Car racing (before the CHAMP/IRL split) and still follow F1 relatively closely. I prefer races where the cars have to change direction, but oval racing can provide some exciting moments.

As I said earlier in this thread, it's not NASCAR specifically that I object to, it's ESPN's suddenly constant in-your-face all-the-time coverage of it. It's more of an ESPN complaint than a NASCAR issue for me, and I'm sure I'm not alone. Instead of simply reporting sports news, they seem to be making a very heavy-handed effort to tell us what we should be paying attention to (which is almost always something they happen to be televising).
