Peyton Manning it was reported today has restrurctured his contract to save the Colts close to 8 million dollars in cap space.( see link below ) I say if Ed Reed REALLY wants A.D to stay like most of his teammates and the rest of the fans that support the him and the team... Why not step up to the plate and do the same...and possibly the Ravens can really work things out. So Ed Reed how about it.. ..Deal or No Deal ??

That's called taking one for the team. Good for Peyton.

He's not exactly "taking one for the team" -- he's still getting all his money. This is just an accounting exercise. He's not giving anything back.

Having said that, it does help the Colts cap situation. If our big-money players really want to keep AD, maybe they could do something, if it's doable -- I don't know the specifics of our big contracts, and would defer to B-More as to whether or not something like that could be done here.

I'd be first in line when it comes to retaining Adalius Thomas; however: Ed Reed will be 34 when his current contract expires in 2012. How can there be a meaningful restructuring without creating a huge dead cap space hit in the future?

I suppose I have to accept Peyton Manning is not the villain I wanted him to be. :grbac:

I didn't care when Ed opened his 24 (or whatever) year old kid mouth about the FO a couple of weeks ago, and I'm not going to start caring now that Peyton Manning's completed an accounting exercise.

Please do not judge Ed Reed too harshly for talking about accounting problems when he should just be quiet. Really, him talking about the nuances of FO operations and the salary cap is a lot like us talking about what happens on a football field. Sure, we see it in action, and we like to talk about it, but we don't know why the coaches called what they did, or the players executed the way they did, or even whether they executed the same thing the coaches called. It's just guesswork, like Ed second guessing the FO.

He should have kept his mouth shut, but he's been a good team citizen, I'll give him the occasional slip up. . .

This isn't even that. It's a PLANNED accounting maneuver. His contract was written with this move in time. It is absolutely NOTHING to do with Peyton. All this is is a "restructure" that converts a roster bonus into a new Signing Bonus. So essentially he re-signed the same contract dollar-wise, and time wise, He still gets the same ammount of money at the same times. They mostly renamed the money. Big Flip. The Raven's do not have contracts set up for this kind fo restructure or even anything similar. The only players with high enough base salaries to restructure are too old. The short list of players is the same list expected to leave either this season or next. All it would do is accelerate and exacerbate the 2008 purge.

This reminds me of the Brady Contract. Everyone lauded him for signing such a meager, small contract, when in actuality the effective contract paid him the highest in the NFL over the short term. Therefore hsi contract would actually pay him more then any other player at the time, when you take out years that were unlikely to be reached. Look at Mike Vick's contract terms to see what I mean, he will NEVER, EVER see the high salary years at the end, but Brady makes almost twice as much in years 1-3. Superstars can be made to llok like self sacrificing teammates, but they are not.

Even if we could do this with some of our contracts, I still think we would need to spend the money on re-vamping the running game and offense before paying Thomas a huge salary. I love AD and I think he is a great player in Baltimore, but he is one piece of a great defense. He will be an above average player with another team but nothing compared to what he was with Baltimore. Remember when we lost Ed Hartwell... someone else will step up.

You all can stop whining about "restructures." No one on this team is going to restructure their deal and nor should they. Restructures are only good, maybe, for that immediate season, but can cripple in the long run.

Say no to restructures.

Just say goodbye to AD.

Well, since Reed has a base salary of only $595K this year, there really is little he can do about restructuring and making any room to re-sign AD.

Correct.

The problem with restructuring contracts is that most that would create any significant cap space are for players (Ray, JO, Rolle, McNair, Mason) that probably won't be around in a year or 2, so redoing their deals will only making things worse when they do depart. Yes, they can save cap room for this year, but it comes at the expense of future cap space.

They can restructure Heap and save some space ($1.7M). They can take McNair's $1M roster bonus and convert it into a signing bonus - saving $750K. They could release Vincent and save $1.6M. Otherwise, there are very few candidates. They could create significant space by restructuring CMac's $6.5M base salary, but his cap number will already be over $10M next year, so a restructure this year would only add more to that number (and those in future years, as well).

Peyton will always be a tool in my book. Anytime he loses, he forgets all about his "team" and throws whoever he can under the bus.

There was some confusion created by Rob Long & Ray Bachman on WNST earlier this afternoon. They were painting Peyton Manning as this consummate team oriented guy and hero who gave up millions for the benefit of his team. As others have pointed out, that isn't really the case here. Peyton will get his money and the Colts will get their cap space.

That could be why some here misinterpreted the shifty accounting.

Long & Bachman later cleared up their misunderstanding.
