The NFL last week dropped its 21-year-old prohibition against home teams using video boards to encourage fans to make noise, according to the Sports Business Journal.
The vote, which came at the NFL owners meetings, led to the latest development in the league’s initiative to improve the in-stadium fan experience.
Teams had been prohibited from flashing on video boards phrases like “Noise,” “Raise the Roof,” “Pump It Up,” “Let’s Hear It!” and “12th Man,” or from creating visual noise meters. Under the new guidelines, teams can use those messages up until 15 seconds before the ball is snapped.

This isn't OPACY. We don't need the scoreboard to tell us when to cheer!

I'm just hoping that teams don't start getting in a hissy fit if stadiums use those messages in the 15 seconds that they are not allowed to. I feel like putting that restriction will make problems.

Plus Ron Burgundy usually does his best to make sure the fans scream just as the Ravens break huddle.
Who could forget: "LADIES AND GENTLEMEN....DEBBBIEEEE PHEEELLLPPSSSSS!!!!!!"

Visual noise meters could be cool. My section got so loud for a 3rd down against the Steelers last year, I literally had a moment of temporary deafness.
I wonder if Bruce will be allowed to emphasize "its 3rrrrrrd Dooowwwnnnn" again, or if the band will be allowed to hold up those paper 3's.

I never thought Ravens fans needed prompting.
It all just feels too much Camden Yards with the piped in "Let's Go O's" chant.
Though I did used to love the guy dressed as Poe with his "Get Crazy!" signs.

No this isn't OPACY and Ravens are already the loudest in the land and know when to cheer. However it will be cool to see a few new graphics on the new HD boards. It only adds to the fan experience.

I wonder if this will effect the ban on players/coaches being shown on the sidelines inciting the crowd?

I like the inbred's in Shittsburgh...."Please be quiet, Big Ben at work," they have to the board tell them when to be quiet.
They have had a "quiet please, offense at work" sign occasionally at M&T.

Didn't Harbs catch some shit for something like that?

Yes Harbs got in trouble for trying to get the crowd into it, which was bullcrap :grbac:
We are plenty loud on 3rd downs. I would like to everybody be that loud on all downs when we are on defense. I certainly make a lot of noise each down but I now sit down on 1st and 2nd down as I was the only one standing the entire time on defense. You get much more projection standing up and allowing your diaphragm to expand. (Yes....I had years of singing lessons).

I cannot stand that childish garbage at OPACY. If you need to be reminded when to cheer or how to support the team, then stay home. I encourage everybody to let it rip on all downs for the defense and not just when the opposition gets to the line. I am in the end zone (opposite the band) and generally we are loud, but every once in a while you need to raise the arms to get the motor started. The best games are when I can barely talk that night. I hope that the Ravens ask some real fans before trying to insult us with some of that stuff. I think overall we do well. I was in Minnesota last year and boy do they need help. I appreciated our fans more after watching them. And I was in Jacksonville a few years ago, but there were more Ravens fans there so that does not count.

I also noticed earlier today that they instituted a new rule that will result in the whistling dead of any play where the ballcarrier loses his helmet.
Seems to have gone largely unnoticed. I can somewhat agree with that one, even if it means losing out plays like that cool Jason Witten catch and run a season or two ago.

Lee,
I must have missed that new addition to the rules. Does this mean that the ball will be dead at the exact spot where the ball carrier loses his helmet?
I understand that they want to protect the carrier from serious injury, but what if a receiver goes up to make a grab, falls down untouched, his helmet falls off and he has nothing but daylight in front of him? Would he be marked down, or does contact have to be initiated first?

NFL rules also will now echo those in college when a player running with the ball loses his helmet. The whistle will blow immediately and the ball will be placed at the “progress spot” where the helmet came off.

How the hell can the display board operator know when the ball is going to be snapped to make sure the display stops 15 seconds before the snap? Will the home team be penalized if the display goes longer? Will the ref's be watching for this?

my favorite memory of a player running without his helmet is Steve Young. I loved that run

I'm pretty sure it will be more like 15 seconds left on the play clock or when the offense comes to the line. you can't really enforce 15 seconds from the time the ball is snapped because you never know when the ball will be snapped.
If they did enforce the rule like it is written im sure Peyton Manning and others would do a quick snap like he does when teams are making substitutions just to get that extra 5 yards or whatever the penalty may be.

They have had a "quiet please, offense at work" sign occasionally at M&T.
And we need it. Some of our fans are just not bright enough to be quiet when we are on offense.

agreed. I don't understand why the fans continue to chant "Let's Go Flacco" when we are on offense

True, but it's really mostly an exhibition season issue. Of the NFL stadia which I have visited, there are few, if any, whose fans are quieter than ours while the home team is on offense. And, except for the domed stadia and the Seattle 1/2 roof, which have noise reflecting architectural advantages over ours, our stadium is as loud or louder than the rest.
We really don't need the video board prompting.

To ensure they don't offend anyone they should just play this clip before each of the opponents offensive snaps.

... "Please be quiet, Big Ben at work," ...
Didn't know they were already leaking testimony.
Couldn't resist.
