It appears Monday will be a day of relief for the Pittsburgh Steelers' organization and starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

According to ESPN's Kelly Naqi, Monday's news conference in Milledgeville, Ga., is to announce Roethlisberger will not be charged after an investigation into accusations of sexual assault.

We will have more on this news coming up in the AFC North blog.

As I suspected in another thread, Big Dumb Jen can still face disciplinary action even without being charged with a crime, per the leagues conduct policy (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/04/09/if-roethlisberger-isnt-charged-he-could-still-face-league-or-team-discipline/).

He aint out of the woods yet, kids.

Yes, the Personal Conduct Policy speaks to engaging in conduct that undermines or puts at risk the integrity and reputation of the NFL, NFL clubs, or NFL players.

I believe that having sexually contact with a 20 year old girl, in a college bathroom qualifies.

The guy may be an ugly creep, and a Steeler on top of that, but I would like to see him challenge a suspension, if Goodell or Rooney were to drop the hammer in the face of criminal charges not being filed in Milledgeville.

First, if Ben has not done something wrong in the eyes of the law, a line should be drawn about the NFL passing judgment in to his (private) sexual behavior -- deviant as it may be. If a suspension is not about his sexual behavior, then it would be flagrantly unfair to suspend him for night clubbing with young hot chicks -- Kyle Boller and hundreds of other NFL players would have been booted years ago.

Second, and more important, I enjoy following the daily Steelers player soap opera drama. The longer this plays out, with more twists and turns, the better reading, especially during the otherwise dull off-season.

I think that the NFL has the legal right to set and enforce certain behavioral standards with its employees.

I agree with your second point. The ongoing drama continues to drag this arrogant franchise through the mud...

Except his transgressions were anything but private. His acts occurred in a public setting.

There is a difference between Kyle Boller, clubbing it up with a drunk (but legal) Tara Reid and Big Jen, taking a drunk and underage co-ed into a bathroom of a college bar for a BJ, of which may or may not have been totally consensual.

And unless I am totally off base (which happens often), this is this first time I can recall where the athlete has admitted to some sort of bad behavior prior to the conclusion of the legal outcome. The league (and the Rooneys) have at their disposal a police report and his lawyers statements, both admitting to taking an under age drunk college chick into a public restroom for the purposes of a sexual act.

The leagues conduct policy does not happen in a vacuum since the league and the NFLPA agree to it's contents.

Now THAT I can agree with you on! I love seeing karma take a giant bite into the collective asses of Shittsburgh fans. Witnessing their fans go bat shit crazy with this makes it almost worth the ten + years of slander they have been engaging in towards Ray.

No charges confirmed by the DA. :ref: The girl reversed herself 10 days afterwards, and there was inadequate male DNA in the sample taken from her to merit making a match.

btw: both ESPN News and NFL Network's covrage sucked. Both pulled away cameras just as the he-said / she-said allegations were going to be explained.

She did not reverse herself. She wrote a letter that stated that she did not want to pursue prosecution, without retracting her previous testimony. Explicitly stating that she would not retract her testimony.

I think the DA's statement was pretty damning towards Rothlisberger's character, having a bodyguard leading intoxicated 20 year old to a bathroom stall, with him following a few minutes later: that is quite different than two drunks hooking up.

My money's either on a 2 game NFL suspension or a backdoor agreement between Goodell and Rooney for a 1 game NFL SUSPENSION followed by a 1 game team suspension.

huh? :187734:

I heard nothing of the sort.

The victims statement says precisely the opposite and the DA never said she recanted, only that he could not get a conviction.

REversed herself like in paid off?

Evidence destroyed by Ben's cops.

It's still a bad day for football.

I don't know what you read Houston. I was going off the DA's statements to the media at 2pm, which I watched until both ESPN and NFL abruptly cut away in favor of draft babble and the Holmes trade. What the DA stated, before being rudely cut off, was that the girl no longer wanted him to prosecute Ben.

Also, you can read the girl's written statement here: http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/10102/1049823-66.stm

Go back to your source and let's see if they are saying anything different.

btw: please tell me where I ever stated that she "recanted". You are, again, putting words in my mouth!

Gees, Ted. Calm down.

You used the word "reversal". Reversal, in the manner you used it, means she reversed herself. Reversal = Recant, of which she did not do. She is saying in her statement she doesn't see the point in moving forward. She is NOT backing away from her story or, as you put it, reversing herself.

And since I am not the only person in the thread who is interpreting your words the same way, might I suggest it is you that needs to be clarifying your words.

I'm not challenging you, just your interpretation.

GA police released some documents about the case today. Pretty damn disturbing. Female says no, Roethlisberger proceeds anyways.

“I told him it wasn’t ok, no, we don’t need to do this and I proceeded to get up and try to leave,” she said.

According to her statement, Roethlisberger then followed her into a nearby bathroom and shut the door.

“I still said no, this is not OK, and he then had sex with me,” she wrote. “He said it was OK. He then left without saying anything.”

Probably came down to her word against his with the lack of any other evidence or witnesses.
