Who was it that wanted Katula gone after last year?
You just got your wish.
To make room on the squad for Brad Jones, Matt Katula was waived by the team. This means our Long Snapper is now Morgan Cox. Glad I didn't submit my 53 man roster entry yet...

Wow...I mean last year he had issues but now we have a rookie LS now? Very surprising.

Actually, that's been the Ravens MO to a point...
Joe Maese was the first guy I can remember...He was with us for a few years, then Katula came along as a Rookie UDFA and everyone figured Maese would be the guy
Low and behold, Maese gets cuts for the cheaper Katula. Katula just got an extension last year which made him pretty well paid for a LS. But generally, as long as you can find someone who can do it pretty consistently, one LS isn't necessarily better than another.

Yeah, but that's the problem - it's not easy to find good ones. The Maese/Katula transaction worked, but they had a lot of trouble in the early years.
Harper LeBel anyone?

He had become consistantly inconsistant. I though he would bounce back, but I guess it is not going to happen here.

Disagree. He's been money his whole career, up until last year. Then he was injured last year, but he definitely was inconsistent on Thurs.

He was very good until about midway through last year, when he became injured and became very bad. He should have been replaced then, but now jsut as well. No cap this year makes it less important, but if his psyche is gone might as well move on. Perfection is expected.

Given that Harbaugh, a former ST coach, is our HC, and Jerry Rosburg, our AHC, is also our ST coordinator...I think they don't make this move unless they are confident that Morgan Cox is good to go as a long snapper.
You figure they just as easily could've released Cox instead of Katula.

Katula didn't play on Thursday. All the long snapping was done by Cox.

Katula didn't do any long snapping Thursday. Cox did it all

Agreed, if anyone knows this position and recognizing talent it's these two guys. This is however a very important decision as it could cost you points in any game for or against. I'm for it as I'm sure they saw something that warranted this move.

Bingo. If there was a game for Cox to misfire, it would have been in that monsoon in his first live action.

I was already having a bad day, B-more, and you had to bring up that name.:grbac:

OK, well then that doesn't make me feel any better because the snaps certainly weren't the greatest on Thursday.
Cox only weighs 226 lbs.

Sure, but I'm a bit surprised that they made the decision after just one game. I'd have thought they'd want to see a bit more of him in live game action before letting Katula go.

He probably should have been placed on IR, I would agree.
He must not have been kicking very well in camp, so they must have felt that his troubles last year weren't entirely due to the elbow.

These are the same two that were sure Steve Hauska was going to be able to replace Stover with out problems, and also were the same two who let our best cover corner get hurt being the gunner on punt team in a blowout. Just saying.

I'm not here to pass judgment on Katula or Cox...just pass along what was shared with me and also my observations during camp...
Regarding camp...while watching the kickers, the snaps almost always seemed spot on regardless of who was the LS.
So if you believe that the two are interchangeable, then you should go with the less expensive one. That's Cox...In so many words that's what I was told by a Ravens insider.
As for poor snaps on Thursday, I'm willing to give Cox the benefit of the doubt because I've seen what he's done in camp AND the conditions were less than ideal (see Carolina's LS on the FGA and PAT).

That's certainly understandable, but I'm just surprised they did it so quickly.
In the similar circumstance when they replaced Maese with Katula, they didn't make the decision until the final cutdown.

The decision does seem premature but I know Katula to be a really solid guy and it could be that the team pulled the trigger now to allow him time to hook on elsewhere.

That sounds reasonable and respectful.

I think that they also might be hedging a bet that Katula will be around towards the end of the preseason since we really want to protect this secondary with practice bodies. He may end up back here in reality, so the quick decision on this may have more to do with the secondary depth.

Katula was a guy who was great to my kid when we were at camp. For that I'll always respect and appreciate him and be glad to have his autograph on a football in our house.
Not surprised to see others write here he was a good guy, and if he reads this board, and I hope and doubt he does, he should know that he was a stand up guy and appreciated by the fans.

The president of his foundation "did".
It sucks that the "best" people are often not the best players. Add Adam Terry n that mix. Great for the community, not great for the team... Oh well, I'm srue he can still be involved in the Special Olympics in Indy...

This is one of those typical Lombardi stories, I like so much! And one of the reasons why 24x7 just is a daily must.

Tony --really enjoyed the article on Katula----I always heard he was a classy guy. I hope he does catch on somewhere. Too bad we couldn't package him in a deal for a cornerback.
I guess his family will go back to rooting for the Packers (if the ever stopped?)
