A federal appeals court has ruled against the Baltimore Ravens and the National Football League in a copyright dispute over the team's original logo. A divided three-judge panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond ruled Thursday that the commercial use of the "Flying B" logo in old game films infringes on amateur artist Frederick Bouchat's copyright.

Perhaps our old VCR tapes of 1996-98 Ravens games will now become collectors items, as the NFL will try to mitigate damages.

Where has this case languished? Just to think: Bouchat stated that he would have been happy with the Ravens rewarding him with some game tickets in 1996. Too bad that he ran into ambulance chasers, to drag this thing out.

As a fan, I am happy that the lawsuit stimulated the Ravens to dump the flying B, which was an embarassment, particularly when compared to the old blue horseshoe. NFL Properties did a hose job on the Ravens fans by overriding our vote for the profile secondary logo, but at least it's an improvement over the original.

The only thing worse than the design itself was how flagrantly the Ravens ripped off the poor SOB's doodle.

I hope the guy who stole the design -- who in turn made one of the most well-run franchises look insanely unprofessional -- is long gone from the organization.

This was a second case that stemmed from the original IP case.

After the dude won his first case, the Ravens still continued to use the logo he created, thus bringing the second suit.

It isn't Bouchat or his ambulance chasing lawyers, it is NFL properties and the Ravens. As you note, he would have settled for small potatoes 15 years ago but the Modell Ravens blew it.
