View Full Version : NFL Network The Top 100 Greatest Players of All Time
Don't know if any of you having been watching this series, but Ed Reed just made the list at number 88. Kinda funny that he was presented by Hines Ward.
What other Ravens will make the list and at what place. Of course Ray Ray is gonna be on there, top 25 at least. But who else?

Ogden, Lewis, Woodson, and perhaps Sharpe.
Yeah I agree Film. With a little luck Stover will find his way onto the list. Doubtful.
I keep thinking about who they will put at number 1. And there's only name that comes to mind... Johnny Unitas.

I think Film nailed it. Maybe Jamal? Excellent piece on Reed though.

I say Walter Payton #1

Jim Brown will be at #1 because everyone has such a hard-on for him. "Oh, he was so good and then he walked away in his prime! Who knows how much more he could have done if he had kept playing!" So... he quit on his team when he still had more to give? To go do movies? Right, he's a hero.

Former Baltimore Colts:
John Mackey #42
Gino Marchetti #39
Raymond Berry #36
Jim Parker #32
I wonder where Ray Lewis and Unitas will end up?

Unitas has to be in the top 5.
My guess for top 5, in no particular order: Unitas, Jim Brown, Joe Montana, Walter Payton, Brett Favre

I'd bet money that Rice is in the top 5.
Probably top 3.
No way Favre is IMO.

My guess, off the top of my head for top 5, in no particular order:
Unitas
Montana
Lawrence Taylor
Jim Brown (actually he will be number one)
Walter Payton

Yeah, I missed that one. I agree. I would take Payton out of my top 5 and insert Rice.

Unitas, Jim Brown, Joe Montana, Walter Payton, Brett Favre
Unitas ---> check! (number 1)
Brown ---> check! (number 2)
Joe Montana ---> check!
Walter Payton ---> check!
Brett Favre ---> :187734: :187734: :187734: :187734: :187734:
Not even close to top 5 material! :ref:
How about - just off the top of my head - any of Baugh, Butkus, Singletery, Sanders, Earl Campbell, Jerry Rice, LT for the 5th spot? If you want to get more current, I'd choose Peyton Manning (hell, I'd even be a little tempted to choose Archie Manning over Favre!)

How bout Emitt Smith? I think he was very overrated but he still had the numbers so he may make the top 5 at least top 10
*32 - Jim Parker T (Baltimore Colts)
** 34 - Dieon Sanders (Atlanta Flacons)
*36 - Raymond Berry E (Baltimore Colts)
*39 - Gino Marchetti DE (Baltimore Colts)
** 41 Rod Woodson DB (Pittsburgh Steelers)
*42 - John Mackey TE (Baltimore Colts)
72 - John Ogden T (Baltimore Raven)
88 - Ed Reed DB (Baltimore Raven)
*94 - Lenny Moore HB (Baltimore Colts)
Suprising to see Ogden over Art Shell (76) but I wont complain. Bednarik (35), Nitschke (47), Lanier (53) all beat Singletary (58). The fact that Ray's name hasn't been mentioned yet is amazing considering the company already listed.
1. Unitas
2. Jerry Rice
3. Walter Payton
4. Joe Montana
5. Jim Brown

You guys better come to terms with the fact that Manning's likely top five and may be #1 overall. Manning is almost inarguably the greatest regular season QB in history, and despite his reputation is still also a very good post-season QB.

Absolutely no disrespect to Johnny U, but I would bet that Jim Brown is voted #1. I also think they will put Montana ahead of Unitas. I wouldn't, but the people who did the rankings probably will.

A link to the current list http://top100.nfl.com/
Ray Lewis, Ronnie Lott, Lawrence Taylor,Jerry Rice, Peyton Manning, Reggie White get in methinks...I'm sure there are others beside those already mentioned. 30 spots left....

My prediction:
1. Jim Brown
2. Johnny U
3. Jerry Rice
4. Joe Montana
5. Walter Peyton
I wouldn't be surprised if Jerry Rice was #2 and Unitas #3.

I don't know how you say Favre isn't up there top 5. He owns every passing record now, good or bad, he's been playing what 20 years now? And his iron man streak of consecutive games started - I mean I dunno. he's a douche, but I see him ranked up there.

As good as Manning is (IMO the best QB I've ever seen play) his lack of mutiple SBs hurts his status.

Yet you have Walter Payton as your #3??? He only has one ring himself.
I agree with PSU on this one. As much as I hate the Colts, I bet he is top 5 with a strong chance he is top 2-3.

Fairly or not, people determine QBs "greatness" partly by number of rings. More so than any other position.

I'd love to see Unitas play in this era of pass interference, illegal contact and roughing the passer etc... Purely an opinion but I bet he put up every bit the stats Manning has.

Good thing Walter Payton and Jim Brown fit the bill! Oh. Waitaminute...
And LOL @ Unitas with multiple championships being the same as multiple Superbowls. He won one game in '58 and '59. It's not even close to the same as what the players go through now.
Manning's single-handedly led his team to two and won one Superbowl. The Colts are not even close to a perennial SB contender without Manning. He almost can't be argued as the greatest regular season QB of all time, and his post season record isn't too shabby either. Multiple rings or not, he has one, and that's gonna be good enough. I'd be shocked if he's not in the top five, and wouldn't be surprised at all if he's #1.
FTR - Jim Brown should be #1. Manning prolly #2.

I dont disagree with you psu. I just think that most people over value SB wins when it comes to the modern QBs. Which will hurt Manning's ranking on this list. When its all said and done Peyton will probably hold all passing records. Like I said best QB I've ever seen play.
Unitas has to be in the top 5.

I don't see Favre as top 5. I think he is a great QB and all of that but I think there are maybe 10 QBs in history better.
Unitas
Montana
Marino
Bradshaw (gag)
Graham
Starr
Brady
Manning
That's 8 without thinking more than 30 seconds about it. Favre is a gun-slinger who throws the ball around way too much. You are sure to make big plays that way, but he throws too many picks.

Read what Namath and Montana said about him in an article from Chuck Finder of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette after John died.
"Johnny Unitas died Wednesday, of a heart attack, at age 69. Modern-day quarterback play has his hightop prints all over it, and those first steps came in Brookline and Mount Washington and Bloomfield.............
Upon Unitas' passing, Joe Namath -- a Beaver Falls native who sent those Colts to their only championship-game loss in four tries, Super Bowl III -- was quoted as calling him "my football inspiration, my hero." Joe Montana of Monongahela said that under today's forgiving NFL rules, this Brookline guy "might have set records that nobody would ever break." Long before Marino and John Elway became masters of the comeback, before they were even born, Johnny U took the football world to school on the two-minute drill."
