From the "guru" of this stuff, AdamJT -

A little disappointing, he has us getting a 4th, 5th and 2 6ths. I had expected 2 4ths, a 5th and 7th.
Based on that post, it appears, if correct, that the escalating salaries because of the new CBA are the reason. But, we'll have to wait and see.
That said, AdamTJ does say that because of the uncertainty this year with the new CBA and just how much they might raise the thresholds, it wouldn't surprise him if Kemo was a 4th and Taylor was a 5th. As such, that could make it 2 4ths, a 5th and a 6th.
FYI, there are reports on other Boards that Eric DeCosta said the FO expects a 3rd and 3 4ths. That seems a bit optimistic to me, so perhaps it will at least fall in the middle somewhere.

I think the FO has some kind of clue with what's going on. The comp picks might make the McGahee trade a wash, we're essentially trading down 3-4 slots in the round this year, who knows about next, and netting a starting runner.

We didn't get anything for Zastudil and Weaver? That's a crime!
If this is the case I think we did ok although although I'd like to have gotten more for Chestor Taylor...maybe a 4th or 5th for him.

I'm confused, I'm sure the calculation of compensatory picks is an equation on gains and losses in free agency, by contract numbers and output on the field.
That said I know this guy is usually pretty accurate so I'll cede to his track record on this.

It is. Contract numbers appear to be the No. 1 factor. Then, the round can increase for "post season honors", but not performance, or decrease for lack of games played/started (this hurt us last year because both Baxter's and Hartwell's seasons ended prematurely and round was dropped).

I just can't see us getting a 3rd for anyone we lost last year. My guess would be a 4th, a 5th a 6th and a 7th.

Weaver netted a 4th. Zastudil appears to be the 5th guy, no team can get more then 4 picks.

I do want to clarify that the reports of Eric DeCosta projecting a third round compensatory pick in '07 are not accurate. I can tell you that in my conversations with him both on and off the air that he is hopeful of receiving four picks but has no idea where those picks might fall. When I brought the posting on another board to his attention, he quickly refuted it. Like I said he is hopeful but is taking nothing for granted with the comp picks that should be announced by the end of the month or a few days sooner.

Thanks TL. That did sound awfully optimistic, and unrealistic.

Yeah, pretty much what I thought.
Some on that board take bits and pieces of statements and run with them...kinda like some reporters!!
Some over there will swear you up and down that because Chester will get us the highest pick...I have always thought the person getting us the biggest return would have been Weaver or Kemo...just based on those contracts.

It's amazing how uninformed some people are.
Thinking we're getting a 3rd and a bunch of 4ths?
Unreal.

Next year we should have a boatload of picks too. Talentwise, I'd love to think Adalius Thomas will net us a third, but I wouldn't be surprised to see us get only a fourth for him. Pashos and Mugelli would likely be a fifth and sixth respectively... maybe only a seventh for Mughelli, even though his deal was rich for his position. With only McGahee as an addition through a trade, there's nothing to offset our losses in their formula.
Unfortunately, these picks can't be traded, so we have no chance of getting back up into the third round without mortgaging a first or second from a future draft... but the added picks ought to help us get depth. Backups are needed at OL, DL, and LB, plus we're probably looking for a third-string QB... I don't see Olsen being in our long-term plans. And we didn't really miss any of the players who left us, so it's a win all around to get anything.

The reason people said this is that they thought DeCosta said something he didn't. Doesn't make them uninformed.

I disagree.
Yes, the it seems that DeCosta was misquoted. Really, anyone not questioning the veracity of the quote needs their head examined.
However (and this is on the other board), once people got it in there head that he said it, it was viewed as gospel.
Seriously Sephy.
You're a great poster. You're tellin me you don't see the ridiculous takes over there?
Hell, someone insisted that Chester Taylor got a $14 million signing bonus.
It was a snowball that turned into an avalanche.

I barely even visit the other board anymore. The takes and posters are pathetic. I thought the idea of getting a third was ridiculous until I thought DeCosta mentioned it, so I didn't see it as out there. Not as gospel, just as a possibility - at least getting more than one 4th. Either way, the point is that board sucks :)
