BJ Sams is signed (http://www.profootball24x7.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7307).
We drafted Damon Figurs, who figures to be a return specialist, in the 3d round, and BJ is recovering from an injury while he prepares for trial on his most recent DWI.
Does he make the team?

I think so. Why not?
I don't think the Ravens want to get caught with their pants down when it comes to return guys this season....although their is questions about Sams...ie; how well will he perform after rehab? How much will he be fully recovered by training camp? What, if any sanctions will the league give him due to his legal(DUI) woes?

Look for him on IR as insurance. When we are forced to do something with him, week 7?, 8?, I can't remember the date, he will be let go.

If he is put on IR, he stays on IR unless they release him with an injury settlement.
They may put him on the PUP list, which is what I think you were referring to.

I think you mean the PUP list. If he was on IR he wouldn't be able to play at all, all year.
I'll say PUP too.

I think you are thinking of the PUP list. If he was on IR, he would be lost for the entire season.
EDIT: Ha, beat me to it RF2K6!

That's the one!! The PUP list. I knew there was some list where we could string him along for a while!

PUP or cut.
But really, it comes down to Figurs. If he's the second coming of Devin Hester (unlikely), i would obviously assume that he loses his spot to him straight up.
Conversely, if Figurs is a bust like Derek Abney was, we'll do whatever it takes to get BJ on track and deal with his legal problems as they come.

Figurs will give BJ some good competition come camp time, and the best man wins. Eric DeCosta said in the transcript that its tough having a kicker, long snapper, punter, and return guy all active on game days, so if Figurs can play WR, he will certainly have an advantage over Sams.
that being said, maybe they do PUP Sams until they decide if Figurs is the guy.

I know sams situation is different then pac man and henry but he is a repeat offender and I believe with GOodel in charge now he will more then likely be suspended four games.
I bet if he is suspended then a lot of people he didn't like figurs in the third will be thinking it was a great pick

I think it is a good idea to have more than one good return guy anyway… we suffered big time last year once Sams went down.
Not to mention seeing us use a few 4 WR sets might be exciting.
Kinda like those odd plays we did last year where we snapped directly to the FB… That was last year ya?

I remember two years ago in the Packers game we snapped it directly to Mark Claytopn who after getting a bad ass block by jamal Lewis scored a TD

If we wanted to use PUP for Sams, he would HAVE to be placed on PUP in the beginning of training camp...The PUP rules state a player can only go on that list if they are placed on PUP in the beginning of training camp, and I believe they have to remain there throughout.
That is why Dan Cody had to be IR'ed his rookie year. There was a chance he could've came back, but he didn't start camp on the PUP.

I would be really surprised if there were any competition at all! If there is competition then Sams would be healthy and unable to be put on the PUP list. I see them handing the job to Figurs, see how he does in Pre-Season, and if he performs well, Sams goes on the PUP to fully rehab the ankle and give us an "until the middle of the season" insurance policy!

If Figurs is all they say it's going to be hard for BJ to make it. BJ still has the trial coming up which very much could mean a 4 game suspension. Another question how has BJ recovered from the broken leg.
This is still a wait and see.

I say no.
Drafting a kid like Figuers on day 1 whos only real ability is kick returning sorta tells me that the FO knows more about BJ Sams' situation then is being let out in public.
Whether that be his health or pending legal issues I don't know.
But to spend that high of a pick on that position just to challenge the guy that's already on your team who was basically heading to the pro-bowl last year if not for his injury???
Don't think so!!

Figurs is a very interesting player to me; I don't think that Figurs is just another "fast track guy" with lots of speed trying to play football. If you haven't already done so, you might want to read DeCosta's Interview Part III:
"A point that hasn’t been made very often is besides Yamon Figurs as a return man and a receiver, there was no better gunner in college football this year. Talk about a weapon. This is a guy who can absolutely fly and he makes an unbelievable impact as a gunner."
Figurs was a gunner - getting down field making tackles. This sounds like a tough little football player to me... he could be very exciting throughout this season.
Go Ravens!

Unlike Sams, Figurs is unproven. As of now. I think B.J. could be ready for the regular season. If not its PUP for him. Sams single-handedly beat the Falcons for us. Doubt Figurs could do that, even after a few years.
Figurs has potential, but maybe he's here as a 3rd WR once Mason leaves. Sams stays.

im sure he will be given the oppurtunity that is if isn't kicked out of the league for 4 games. Being suspended w/o pay is a bad even for 4 games.
Think about it if any of you got suspended without pay from your job for 3 months. What would that say about you?

Conversely, if Figurs is a bust like Derek Abney was...
Woah dude...pretty tough for a seventh rounder to be a "bust". Abney was only a potential return guy with pretty much no other hope to be anything else. And more importantly, he got hurt early. He never had a chance to show anything for us...
Figurs is probably our #4 receiver. Moore will get end zone looks. That leaves Darling likely out of the mix. Sams might get a shot to win the job back, but my guess is he's more insurance for something happening to Figurs. I don't think we draft a guy like Figurs if we don't expect him coming in to win the job.
Read the DeCosta interview. They expect Figurs to be both the return guy and a receiver threat. He specifically said that it gives the ability to free a roster spot cause you have a guy that can do two jobs rather than just one. Sams might get the Pup list, but he also might just hit PS (where he'll probably get picked up by someone else).

IF...he isn't suspended; if he recovers from the injury...he and Figurs will duel it out in preseason. the question is; if both do well, will both be kept? will Sams be kept based on track record? can they keep both, figuring Figurs can be a WR? and would this take Devard Darling's roster spot?
I can kind of see DD playing Arena ball next year.
here's hoping BJ has learnt his lesson and will be a Good Citizen from now on. let the Bengals and Squealers have the police-record players. He's done very well to have come from a small school/undrafted; I'd really like him to have a long & successful career.
ps; I thought CMoore was already gone?

Well, now that Sams got acquitted of his DUI/DWI, there is no need to worry about a suspension. I still think they have a competition in camp and the best man wins. But I think Figurs kinda has a leg up (no pun intended) since he can play receiver as well.

Maybe not, Goodel doesn't like repeat offenders, although in his defense B.j. has only got caught driving drunk twice (as bad as that sounds)
